Cheetah PridePress! Weekly Update January 6, 2023

Head Cheetah's Message

Families,

Happy New Year! Andrea and I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and have returned to your routines feeling healthy and refreshed. This month, the Profile Of A Graduate skill that we’ll be focused on is WONDER. Throughout the month, we will be discussing what it means to wonder, and exploring how it contributes to our sense of awe about the world around us. Students will grow to understand how wondering motivates us to learn more about topics of interest.

We are also thrilled to announce that Memorial School now has a climbing wall. Thanks to the generosity of the EHEPTO, the structure was professionally installed in our gymnasium over the December break. The climbing wall will be utilized on a consistent basis during P.E. classes under the direction of our coaches, Greg Ruel and Bob Boscarino. We can’t wait to see our young cheetahs grow their muscles and coordination! Please review additional information about the climbing wall below.

Thank you for your continued partnership!

Joey and Andrea

The Profile of A Graduate Monthly Principle Is Wonder

Memorial students had class discussions about things they wonder about and created WONDERful bulletin boards. Students completed a wonder response sheet. They were so inquisitive! Someone said “ I wonder if clouds are born or made?” Another said, “I wonder what teacher I will have next year?”

The NEW Rock Wall The NEW Rock Wall

Memorial School Has A New Rock Wall

Thanks to the generosity of the EHEPTO, we are thrilled to share that Memorial School now has a climbing wall in our gymnasium! It was professionally installed over the December break, and it will be used regularly during P.E. classes. Coach Ruel and Coach Boscarino will spend the next couple of weeks reviewing expectations with students and staff; and then we can expect to see our young cheetahs growing their climbing skills! Here you can see one of our students demonstrating the proper use of the wall. Way to go!

Important Notes about using the wall: In order to use the wall, students must be wearing sneakers on their scheduled P.E. days. In addition to this, for safety reasons, students may not wear jewelry when using the climbing wall. The only exception to this are earrings that don't dangle. They may be worn. If students come to school wearing any dangling jewelry on P.E. days, they will have to remove it before climbing. Therefore, it might be best to leave all jewelry at home on the designated days.

I-Ready Diagnostic Assessments For Literacy and Numeracy I-Ready Diagnostic Assessments For Literacy and Numeracy

zoom_out_map

Each year the East Hampton Public Schools administers the i-Ready Diagnostic in Reading and Math in the fall, winter, and spring to monitor student growth and performance. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning. These results are reviewed as one data point amongst other assessments, observations and data regarding student performance. The assessment is integrated into your child’s day as part of their academic learning and is paced to ensure that they work on the assessment in small chunks of time. The implementation of this assessment is completed in accordance with Connecticut State Department of Education guidelines. I-Ready will begin the week of January 9th.

The i-Ready Diagnostic will provide results that help our team identify your child’s strengths and determine next steps for instruction. All students in grades 1-5 have access to i-Ready Instruction upon completion of the Diagnostic. i-Ready Instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual strengths and areas for growth. These lessons are targeted based on your child’s performance on the Diagnostic, are interactive in design, and provide strategic supports to keep your child engaged as they learn.

Library News

Hi Cheetah families!

January is well under way in the Memorial School Library!

See below for grade level classroom expectations.

  • PreK students are enjoying a variety of read alouds and songs with the winter theme.

  • Kindergarten is working on practicing their ABC order and learning about call numbers in preparation for 1st grade. So far we have talked about what E stands for (everybody/picture books) and what numbers mean (non-fiction). Later in the month we will move into discussing the Caldecott Award and reading some of the past winners in advance of this month’s announcement of the 2023 winner.

  • First grade has begun discussing call numbers and how the library is organized. We have learned what the Dewey system is and are practicing sorting books by their call number category. Later in the month we will move into discussing the Caldecott Award and reading some of the past winners in advance of this month’s announcement of the 2023 winner.

  • Second grade is finishing up their coding unit; they have been using a program called Code Monkey. Each student will have their own account which can be used at home if they wish. Our goal is to practice at least an hour of coding in January, which will be broken up over a few class periods.

  • Third graders are finishing practicing some technical skills in Google Slides by creating a winter stop motion animation. They have had a lot of fun and are very excited to share their animations with their peers. Later in the month we will be returning to using Code Monkey and gaining some in depth knowledge so that we can talk about how to write code.

Nurses Notes

Dear Parents/Guardians of Preschool Students:

This is your final reminder to those families who have not yet submitted documentation regarding flu vaccine.

Per State of Connecticut statutes, all Pre-K students, 24-59 months of age, must receive an annual dose of flu vaccine given between August 1 - December 31. For those children receiving influenza vaccine for the 1st time, 2 doses of flu vaccine are required, administered at least 28 days apart.

This has been a requirement by the State Immunization Department since 2011.

Please have your child’s doctor or office staff complete the necessary form to show that the vaccine was given and send a copy to the school as soon as possible.

If your child does not receive the flu vaccine, they will be excluded from school from 1/1/23 until 3/31/23 or until the child has received at least 1 dose of influenza vaccine.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Please send in a paper copy or fax to our office at 860-365-4024.

Sincerely,

Katie Williams, RN, Memorial Elementary School Nurse
