Principal's Perspective Principal's Perspective

Principal Walhof at Legacy Campus with 2 DCSD CNA students.
zoom_out_map

Happy Friday,

It’s been another busy, albeit short, week here at ThunderRidge. I hope we all take a moment today ponder the 25th anniversary of 9/11 - sending our positive thoughts to all of those involved.

Last week, I was lucky enough to run into some of the students in our district’s CNA program at the Legacy Campus. It was so much fun to see their classroom and to see the practical skills they are gaining in this Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway.

It was Senior night for Boy’s Tennis on Tuesday. I always appreciate the consistent effort our athletes devote to their sports - and that their families devote to supporting them as well.

We had the National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony on Wednesday and inducted well over 50 new members. Many thanks to the students and parents who attended the ceremony. A highlight for me was hearing a family tell how they got a picture of three generations of their family’s NHS members that day. One grandparent even showed me the card he got at his NHS induction ceremony in 1966! How cool is that!?!

It’s a pleasure to see so many TRHS students investing in the four pillars of National Honor Society: scholarship, service, leadership, and character, whether they do so from within NHS or in their own ways as they walk the halls and compete on the fields/courts at TRHS.

We had our Marching Band Showcase on Wednesday as well. If you’ve never been to this event, I hope you get the chance to go next year. Getting to see high school students from across Douglas County cheering for each other and supporting each other is so uplifting. There’s plenty of time for friendly competition, and it’s also nice to just celebrate each other from time to time.

The votes are in and the destination has been chosen for the IB Community, Action, and Service trip this Spring Break! If your student is a Junior or Senior in the IB program and would like to go to Athens this Spring Break, please reach out to the IB office at trhsib11@dcsdk12.org for more info.

Speaking of celebrations, DCSD is asking our current families to share their positive school experiences through online platforms like Niche.com and GreatSchools.org. These are where many families look when choosing a school community. If you have time and a great story to tell, please don’t keep that to yourself!

  1. Visit Niche.com or GreatSchools.org

  2. Search for your school’s name.

  3. Click “Write a Review” and share what makes your school special (programs, teachers, community spirit or events that stand out).

I feel like we are finally getting into the groove of the school year with students getting accustomed to their classes. Homecoming and Field Day preparations are going well (although I’m starting to hear some claims circulating about which grades will beat the others for Ruff-N-Tuff or for class cheer…). We’ll see who triumphs this year!

If you’re like me as a parent, you may be nosy about what your student is learning - but might get, “It was fine” when you ask how the day went.

As I was doing some of my professional reading this week, the following sentence starters for parents jumped out at me. You might give these a try if you’re tired of three word answers! No guarantee they will work for you and students, but it’s certainly worth a shot - as all these prompts help students think about the competencies they are developing through their learning - not just about work completion and grades.

  1. Ask students to tell you something they didn’t know before on a topic and to extend their answers with examples and/or sources.

  2. Ask students to share examples of how an idea in class connects to the world outside of school or what questions a learning experience raised for them.

  3. Ask students what relationships they noticed across ideas or within and across different subject areas. (Some students naturally love to see these connections whereas others may prefer for you to make an initial connection that they could build on or modify.)

  4. Ask students what changed in their thinking (e.g. a new concept, a change in their previous understanding, or something they noticed about their peers).

  5. Ask students what they think about ideas shared in class - and what evidence they have to support those ideas. Then ask students to share other perspectives and what led others to support those.

In closing, I feel as if some of the initial round of posts (pro and con) about the Mill Levy Override (MLO) issue that will be on the ballot in November may have died down a little recently - but I’m sure they will come back with a fury as we get closer to voting. You can learn more about this specific MLO proposal here. Would you all like to have an opportunity to learn more in person and to be able to ask questions? I have zero interest in telling folks how to vote, but I am happy to arrange a time for people to ask questions and get information if that would be helpful to them. Let me know your thoughts and if you would be interested in that or not.

Have a wonderful, wonderful weekend!

:) Liz

October Count and Funding for Schools October Count and Funding for Schools

As we move into the fall, we want to highlight a critical date for our district: Thursday, October 1, 2026. Student count day is the official date each fall when Colorado school districts record their enrollment numbers, which the state then uses to calculate per-pupil funding for the year.

The state determines our funding based on three factors around this date: your student's active enrollment, their scheduled instructional time, and their daily attendance. To ensure our funding is accurate, the state evaluates attendance specifically on October 1st and during the standard two-week window encompassing the week before and the week after Count Day.

How you can help support our schools:

  • Make Attendance a Priority: Please make every effort to ensure your student is present and engaged in their learning on Thursday, October 1st.

  • Keep the Momentum: Consistent attendance throughout the entire two-week window surrounding Count Day is strongly encouraged to ensure accurate state reporting.

  • Communicate Absences: We understand illnesses and emergencies happen. If your child is sick, please notify our attendance office right away. Proper documentation allows us to navigate state exceptions if a student must miss the exact count date.

Calling All Community Members: Be a part of the Senior Project Process! Calling All Community Members: Be a part of the Senior Project Process!

    Become a Senior Project Mentor

ThunderRidge High School is looking for community members and professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and experience by serving as Senior Project Mentors.

As a mentor, you will guide a student through the learning process, provide feedback and encouragement, and help them develop their skills and knowledge in their chosen area of study. Mentors also help verify the student’s effort and participation in the physical product or fieldwork component of the project.

Because much of the product and fieldwork takes place outside of the classroom, mentors play an important role in helping students stay accountable and documenting their learning. Serving as a mentor does require a time commitment, including regular communication with the student throughout the project.

Interested in becoming a mentor? Start by completing the Mentor Sign-Up Form. After submitting the interest form, you will receive a follow-up email with a district volunteer application. This application must be completed and returned before you can officially serve as a mentor.

Thank you for helping our students explore their interests, develop new skills, and take their learning beyond the classroom!

    Become a Senior Board Judge

ThunderRidge High School is looking for community members to serve as judges for our Senior Boards on Friday, April 9, 2027, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Senior Board judges will have the opportunity to listen to and evaluate our seniors as they showcase their learning through their oral presentations, portfolios, and project products. This is a wonderful opportunity to see our students at their very best as they share the knowledge, skills, and personal growth they have developed throughout their Senior Project experience.

No special expertise is required—just a willingness to encourage students and provide thoughtful feedback. Training and lunch will be provided on Senior Board Day.

We invite community members to join us in celebrating our seniors and helping make this culminating experience a meaningful one. Come be part of the day as our seniors prepare for their time to shine!

    Counselors' Corner Counselors' Corner

This past week in the counseling office, TRHS Counselors saw over 80 students for academic planning, social emotional support, and post secondary planning.

We were so excited to see so many parents here for senior parent night! If you missed the event, you can access the presentation with all the information here. Please reach out to your student’s counselor with any questions.

The college application season is approaching, and counselors are working to ensure that our seniors are feeling prepared and confident. To that end, seniors will attend the following meetings to get the help they need:

    • Meet with our post grad specialist, Mrs. Szilagyi, to help complete tasks in Naviance (our post secondary software), that will enable students to submit applications, send transcripts, and letters of rec. Mrs. Szilagy was available this past Tuesday and Thursday, and again next Wednesday, all day in the library. Students are expected to attend during their off period.
    • Schedule their senior meeting with their counselor, where we begin to create their senior post secondary plan and provide them with the resources they need.

Be sure to sign up for a college visit!

College representatives from across the country visit TRHS to meet with students in small groups. These sessions give students a chance to learn about academic programs, campus life, and financial aid, while also practicing communication skills, showing interest to admissions officers, and finding the right college “fit.” To sign up for a college visit, log on to Naviance, click on “colleges”, “research colleges”, then “college visits”.

    Mindful Minute:

Feeling stressed? Take a minute to be mindful.

Sit in a chair, in a relaxed, upright and dignified posture with your feet planted on the ground.

Then closing your eyes, bring your focus to the breath. Continue to breathe normally in and out and do this for a few breaths.

Once you feel comfortable that you have a sense of your breath begin the 1 minute, setting a timer if that helps.

Mentally count each out breath. Breathe in, breathe out, count 1. Breathe in, breathe out, count 2, etc.

Take note of how you feel!

Theory of Knowledge Prescribed Essay Titles

Ever wondered how we know what we know, or why two people can look at the same dataset and reach opposite conclusions? Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a core course of the IB Diploma Programme. TOK is an interdisciplinary class designed to turn passive consumers of information into critical, independent thinkers. Juniors in the IB Diploma Programme start their TOK journeys in the spring, and then complete the course in the fall of their Senior year. With that being said, our Seniors are in the throes of completing TOK and just received their TOK Essay Titles.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) has officially released the May 2027 Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Prescribed Essay Titles, launching senior DP candidates into their summative critical thinking challenge. These six prompts ask students to evaluate how we construct, justify, and question knowledge across disciplines. The prompts this year are really interesting, and might inspire some quality discussion around the dinner table, on a long drive, or any other time families want to "get into it". If these epistemological discussions are something that might interest you, we'd encourage you all to check out the May 2027 Prescribed Titles HERE.
