Fall Fest Recap!
Family nights at Cooper are the best nights!!! Fall Fest was a blast! Thank you to all of our volunteers and our families for making it a great night for our Cooper Cubs! A special thank you to Dan's Feed Bin for donating the corn for our corn dig scavenger hunt, and to our PTA for donating and hosting the hot dog, chips and cookie meal!
Averi K and Kyana L were the lucky winners of our giveaways, and we had some expert estimators at our estimation center! Ezra L went home with a jar of M&Ms for his exceptional estimating! Aimee H-J and Madden M tied in their guesses for number of pumpkins, and Brylee A and Kensi C tied in their estimates of candy corn! We hope they all shared their spoils!!!
Unity Day - Wear Orange on October 22nd
Unity Day, started by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center in October 2011, is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month. This is a day when we can come together to send a visible message of building commUNITY through kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. The call to action is simple: wear and share the color orange. This vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, showing support for students who have been bullied and for bullying prevention.
Trunk or Treat & Dance - Oct. 29th
If you would like to host a trunk or drop off a candy donation to be handed out that night, please contact our secretary, Katie Penney, in the office or email her at katie.penney@superior.k12.wi.us. WE ARE LOOKING FOR 15 MORE TRUNKS!!!!
Continuous Improvement Plan
Greetings Cooper Families,
I’m thankful for the opportunity to share some information with you in this month’s newsletter. I’m a member of our school’s Shared Leadership Team and wanted to let you know a bit more about our work. Our team carefully evaluates our school’s data, considering how we can work together to increase the learning of all students. As part of Cooper’s Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP), Mrs. Stariha has already shared that we’ve chosen to focus on both reading and math this year. I’d love to share with you what this looks like.
At Cooper, teams of teachers get together before the school day, on a weekly basis, to focus on this work. During this time we evaluate the tests and work of our students, discuss teaching best practices to be sure we are helping all students, and collaborate and share ideas with each other. It is so important to us to meet our learners’ needs, and this time together allows us to do just that. We discuss both reading and math learning goals during this time.
This year teachers are using a brand new reading program, called Benchmark Advance. I personally have found it to be fun, interesting, and challenging. It allows all students many opportunities throughout the day to practice a variety of learning skills such as fluency, vocabulary and comprehension development, and writing.
Conference nights are approaching quickly. They are held the evenings of Thursday, October 23rd and Tuesday, October 28th at Cooper. We look forward to sharing your student’s progress with you soon!
Don’t forget all are welcome to join us the evening of October 29th from 5:30-7pm for Trunk-or-Treat, fun music, and dancing. Hope to see you there!

October is Bullying Prevention Month
What Is Bullying?
Bullying is when someone repeatedly tries to hurt someone else on purpose, and it usually involves an imbalance of power. Bullying can include actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and purposely excluding someone from a group. Everyday conflict and accidents happen, but they are not repeated and do not include a power imbalance or an intent to harm.
Preventing bullying starts with a foundation of respect and kindness. That is just one of the reasons we work so hard at Cooper to reinforce the importance of being a respectful and responsible citizen, kind friend, and including others. We focus on the power of being an upstander - someone who, in whatever way feels safe for them, stands up for others who are being disrespected, put down, or left out.
School Wide Reading Incentive Program
The library, PTA, and Family Engagement Coordinator have teamed up to create an at-home reading incentive program! Watch for a coloring sheet to keep track of those reading minutes. Students who reach the goal will receive a prize at the end of the month!
All reading counts! Students can read with someone, listen to a book, or read on their own. Get that very important practice in. Thank you for your support!
