West Belmar
WB In the Bear Cave

August 2026
A Message From Principal Abeal
Dear West Belmar Families,
I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer, spending time with family and friends at the Jersey Shore. The staff has certainly missed all the Bear Cubs over the summer months.
As the summer winds blow, it is hard to believe it is Mid-August already. The staff have been keeping busy here at West Belmar School preparing for the opening of school on Thursday, the 3rd of September for grades K-5. On August 10th, annual Parent forms will be available in Genesis. These forms must be acknowledged prior to receiving a teacher assignment that will be sent later this month. Please log in to your Parent Genesis Portal to acknowledge these forms.
Here is a link to access your Genesis Parent Portal to access your account to complete the parent annual forms. If you need assistance or are having issues accessing Genesis, please contact the West Belmar School main office at 732-556-2560. We will be happy to assist you.
As you prepare your child for school, be sure to check out the grade level supply lists posted on the district website and on this newsletter below. The staff is looking forward to the return of the Bear Cubs and certainly welcomes new Bear Cubs to our school for another exciting school year.
As we approach the new school year, some children may get a bit anxious, especially if they are new to the school. You can alleviate this with a couple of visits to the school, so take some time and stop by the school to pay a visit! You may even be able to get a peek into their classroom. Teachers have been stopping in all summer, so you may be able to say a quick “HELLO!”
Under the leadership of Mr. Todd Hazard, the building has been cleaned and polished and ready for the new school year. There has been a deep cleaning of the entire school including cleaning and waxing the floors, organizing storage areas throughout the school, repainting common areas, as needed and preparing classrooms for staff and students.
As summer approaches its end, this is the time when children begin to get really excited about coming back to school. Build upon that by sharing funny or positive stories about your time in school. Rest assured that all our students will quickly become acclimated to their new teacher and environment.
Our outstanding and dedicated Parent Teachers Association is prepared for an exciting and productive school year, supporting our children and educational programs. Once again, they have planned for many fun educational opportunities for our students. This includes meaningful academic assemblies, fun family nights, and support our special days at school.
Our PTA is truly a group of committed individuals that volunteer their time to enrich the experience of every student at West Belmar School. I encourage all parents to join the PTA and take an active role in their fundraising efforts to enrich the bear cubs educational experience.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you in the upcoming weeks!

Attendance Matters at the WB!
Why Every Day Matters
Good attendance lays the foundation for a child’s academic success. When students attend school regularly, they keep up with class lessons, build confidence, and develop strong relationships with teachers and peers. Even just two absences per month (about 10% of the school year) can create gaps in learning and make it harder to catch up. We encourage families to make every effort to have students present and on time, because every day really does add up. We need our "Bear Cubs in the Cave"!

Ready, Set, Belong: 5 Ways to Prepare for a Positive Start
Whether your child is entering elementary, middle, or high school, the start of a new school year brings a mix of excitement, anticipation, and sometimes a little uncertainty. While each stage of development presents unique experiences, there are a few universal strategies that can help students of all ages feel prepared, connected, and confident.
1. Get Back into a Routine
A week or two before school starts, begin returning to school-year routines. Younger children can practice bedtime and morning routines, while older students can reset sleep schedules and organize school materials.
2. Build a Sense of Belonging
Connecting with familiar peers can make returning to school feel easier. Plan a playdate for younger children or encourage older students to connect with friends before the first day.
3. Get Familiar with the School Routine
Help your child know what to expect. Younger children can practice drop-off, while older students can review schedules, transportation, locker combinations, or classroom locations.
4. Encourage Voice and Agency
Help your child practice speaking up, asking for help, and solving everyday problems. Talk through situations such as forgetting lunch, getting lost, missing the bus, or needing help. Older students can practice emailing a teacher or asking a question on their own.
5. Talk About Their Feelings
Make time to talk about excitement, worry, or uncertainty. Help your child make a simple plan, such as talking to a Trusted Adult, reaching out to a friend, or asking a teacher for help.
