Shadow Day at Mill Max Manufacturers
By 2035, there will be over 2.1 million manufacturing jobs in demand to satisfy the nation's energy needs. Baldwin Union Free School District has already begun to address this anticipated demand by starting a pipeline of students to the manufacturing field through hands-on learning excursions. Most recently, a select cohort of students from Baldwin High School and Baldwin High School@Shubert participated in a Shadow Day at Mill Max Manufacturers. Students explored the different operations within the company, learned about the specific materials being made as well as about the job opportunities that are available in the field. By the end of the experience, the students spoke about potentially working at the company and submitted their resumes for review.
Full STEAM Ahead: Meadow Students Design Solar Ovens
During a recent STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) lesson, Meadow 4th graders were able to integrate science with the engineering design process to create and improve a solar oven, which they used to cook S’mores! Students completed a variety of activities, from designing to testing and improving their ovens. The students also virtually met with Ms. Anneliese Stephenson-Wenn, a United States Peace Corps volunteer, who shared her experiences in Botswana, Africa, a place the students have been studying. Through a Q&A session, the Meadow students learned about technologies, such as the solar ovens they constructed, being used to help the people in Africa.
