Goshen School District Business Advisory Council Update

Meeting #2 Recap – December 4, 2024

On December 4, 2024, the Goshen School District Business Advisory Council convened to discuss key initiatives aimed at enhancing College and Career Readiness (CCR) programs and strengthening community partnerships. Brian Bailey kicked off the meeting with updates on the RFQ strategic planning, highlighting its significant impact on shaping CCR initiatives and aligning them with the district's long-term vision.

For a comprehensive overview, please refer to the Meeting Notes and view the PowerPoint Presentation.

Health Care and IT Pathways

Health Care Initiatives:
The council plans to collaborate with the GRIT Initiative and HealthSource Ohio to explore pilot programs through the HealthCorp initiative. Additionally, the expansion project at State Route 28 promises increased student involvement and stronger community ties. 28 high school students recently visited Cincinnati State, gaining valuable exposure to various health care programs and career opportunities.

IT Pathways:
Discussions included the recent UC Early IT Roundtable Event hosted by the University of Cincinnati, emphasizing the expansion of the Early IT program across Ohio. Garrett Walt highlighted efforts to broaden cybersecurity education, including certifications and career pathways for students. The council is also exploring the integration of US Bank’s Malware Awareness Program into STEM classes or as a summer initiative to enhance students' understanding of cybersecurity threats.

Community Engagement and Business Partnerships

Linked Up Initiative:
Darrell Edwards, in collaboration with the Clermont County Education Service Center, is leading strategies to boost business participation in the Linked Up dashboard, aiming to create more student opportunities by connecting them with local businesses.

GNN and Connect Clermont Partnership:
Bob Pautke announced a generous $10,000 grant awarded to the Goshen News Network (GNN) through its partnership with Connect Clermont. This grant will enhance GNN’s studio capabilities, benefiting both students and the community. Additionally, the council is working with Marr/Cook Elementary on CCR Monthly Focus Areas based on the Portrait of a Goshen Graduate, starting with empathy followed by confidence in December. GHS students are producing feature videos starring the Goshen service dogs, gaining valuable experience in creative content creation.

Work-Based Learning and Career Connections

Career Advisement with LEAD Training:
Funds have been allocated to pilot a career advisement program with LEAD Training, where Paige Visage provides personalized career guidance to students through one-on-one and small group sessions.

Mock Interviews Success:
Owen Huff led successful mock interviews organized by his team within the Career-Based Intervention (CBI) program. He developed a robust and well-organized unit with his students, leading to significant positive outcomes. Members of the Business Advisory Council suggested potentially starting mock interviews as early as 9th grade and embedding them into the Financial Literacy curriculum, a graduation requirement in Ohio, to better prepare students for future career opportunities.

Kroger Partnership and Supply Chain OKI:
Jesse Simmons provided updates on student interview opportunities with Kroger and other business contacts via Supply Chain OKI. Ron Healey continues to support these initiatives from his position in Kroger's IT Department, focusing on enhancing work-based learning experiences and strengthening career connections.

This semester, Lexi Ritchie and Alex Smith were thrilled to receive replies to their letters. These responses not only highlighted their efforts but also offered valuable insights into professional correspondence and business communication.

Mock Interviews: Preparing for Professional Success

The week before Thanksgiving provided the perfect opportunity for Goshen High School students to participate in mock interviews—a valuable exercise in preparing for their future careers. These preparatory scenarios allowed students to experience a job interview in a safe, constructive, and familiar environment while receiving feedback to improve their professional skills.

What Students Gained

Mock interviews taught students key skills, including:

  • How to Dress Professionally: Understanding the importance of making a great first impression.
  • Effective Communication: Practicing how to speak clearly and confidently.
  • Answering Common Questions: Preparing for the types of questions employers often ask.

The Professional First Impression

Several qualities that contribute to a strong first impression were evaluated:

  • How the students introduced themselves.
  • Whether they shook hands.
  • Their eye contact.
  • Verbal articulation and clarity.
  • Body language.
  • Awareness of visible cues that might show nervousness.

Reflection and Feedback

Following the interviews, students were encouraged to reflect on their performance:

  • How do you think you did?
  • What do you think you did well?
  • Is your resume missing anything?
  • What could you do differently next time?

Spotlight on Career Based Intervention (CBI) Students

Under the guidance of Mr. Owen Huff, the CBI program is helping students expand their interpersonal skills and confidence in professional settings.

A number of professionals from both inside the school district and the broader community volunteered their time to interview, score, and provide constructive feedback to students. Their involvement gave students meaningful insights into what employers look for during interviews and how to make improvements for the future.

Mock interviews are a valuable part of preparing students for success, helping them build confidence and develop skills they’ll carry into the workforce.
