The Principal's Perspective

The Making of a Diamond
Dear Caregivers:
As you know, our district, and by extension, Nichols, is experiencing a period of significant change. These changes can sometimes feel challenging, and it's natural to wonder about their impact on our children's education and well-being. I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a perspective that I hope will be both reassuring and inspiring.
I'd like to draw a parallel to a fascinating natural process, especially as we approach Earth Day: the transformation of elements depending on the pressure that is experienced.
Both coal and diamonds are made of the same element: carbon. However, they are vastly different in appearance and value. What transforms one into the other? The answer, quite simply, is intense pressure and time.
Coal Formation: Coal is formed over millions of years from decaying plant matter, buried deep within the earth. It is a substance that, while useful, is relatively common and unrefined.
Diamond Formation: Diamonds, on the other hand, are created when carbon is subjected to immense pressure and extremely high temperatures deep within the Earth's mantle. This process, taking place over millions, sometimes billions of years, forces the carbon atoms to bond in a unique, incredibly strong crystal structure. The result is a gemstone of exceptional beauty, durability, and value. And, something that is symbolic of two of the greatest gifts one can receive, love and commitment.
In essence, it is the challenges—the pressure and the heat—that transform ordinary carbon into something extraordinary.
This process mirrors, in many ways, what we, our children, and our school, experience when we face challenges; these experiences can feel uncomfortable and demanding. The changes within our district may present some unique challenges. There may be moments where we feel like we're under pressure, or things aren't as clear as we'd like them to be due to the unknown of situations that we have never quite encountered before.
However, it is precisely through these challenges that we grow and develop. Just as the carbon atoms are forged into a diamond, our school community will emerge from these times stronger, more resilient, and more brilliant than before.
Here are some of the positive outcomes we can anticipate:
Stronger Community: Challenges often bring people together. We have already seen countless examples of our staff, parents, and students supporting one another, creating an even stronger and more connected school community.
New Opportunities: Change can also open doors to new possibilities. As the district evolves, we may see new approaches that enhance the educational experience for our students.
At Nichols Middle School, we are committed to supporting your children every step of the way. We will continue to provide a safe, supportive, and challenging learning environment where they can grow and thrive. We encourage you to partner with us, to stay informed, and to communicate any concerns or questions you may have.
Together, we can ensure that our students not only weather these changes but emerge from them as the truly remarkable individuals we know they can be.
Sense of Belonging!
Happy Passover!
We would like to acknowledge Jewish Passover through April 20th. Passover (Pesach) is an eight-day Jewish holiday observed in the spring to celebrate the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Beginning on the 15th day of Nisan, the first month of the Jewish calendar, Passover is marked by two central practices: the avoidance of leavened bread (chametz) and the Seder, a special meal that includes a retelling of the Exodus story.
Happy Easter!
We would like to acknowledge all those who celebrate Easter and Good Friday. Our day off, Friday, April 18th, coincides with Good Friday. Good Friday is a Christian holy day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Observed on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, it is a time of mourning and reflection for many Christians, often expressed through church services, fasting, and prayer. Easter, a subsequent Christian holiday, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day following his crucifixion. This joyful occasion marks the end of Lent, a period of fasting and repentance, and symbolizes hope, new life, and salvation through Christ's triumph over death.
We Need You!
Caregiver Feedback
In the near future, we will be inviting parents to contribute to our school improvement planning for next year. Additional information will be shared soon. To ensure transparency, we want to make you aware that this collaborative effort will require an estimated three hours of your time, distributed across two-three meetings.

It's Not Goodbye, It's See You Later
As the Nichols Community is aware, Ms. Ernvall has accepted a position as an assistant principal at another District 65 school next year. She will remain an integral part of our Nichols team through June 30; please join me as we wish her well in her future endeavors with D65. We appreciate her contributions to Nichols and know she will continue to be a valuable asset to District 65. We would also like to acknowledge and say thank you to Mr. Oviedo, our concierge, whose role was also impacted due to the budget reductions. He has been a vital member of our community always going above and beyond his duties, he has been a role model, and someone the students can talk to. He will remain in his duties through the end of the school year. We appreciate the commitment of both Mr. Oviedo and Ms. Ernvall.
Congratulations Girl's Soccer!
