Attendance and Absences

DCPS is transitioning to a new system for tracking excused absences. Starting September 8th, parents and caregivers must submit excuse notes for attendance through Aspen GO—a mobile friendly version of Aspen Parent Portal, and the same platform used for school enrollment and reenrollment. Please visit the DCPS Attendance webpage for guidance on how to submit an excuse note.

Save The Dates!

  • October 31st: Halloween!
  • October 31st: Also the last day of the 1st Quarter
  • November 3rd: Records Day, no school for students
  • November 4th: First day of the 2nd Quarter
  • November 7th: Smithsonian Museum of Natural History Field Trip NEW DATE

Field Trip - NEW POTENTIAL DATE IS FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7th

Permission slips (linked here) will go home this weekend for an upcoming geography and science field trip to the Smithsonian NMNH on Friday, 11/7. The geography department will focus on the “Africa Voices” exhibit, and science will cover fossils and geologic history.

There is no cost for the trip and students will only need to bring:

  • Lunch

  • Water bottle

  • Coat

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Kids ride free card (if they have one)

Unfortunately, we will not know the operating statues of the museum based on the government shutdown and may need to cancel – this will be communicated once we know more. For now, we will be collecting permission slips in the hope of being able to go!

Please sign and return both sides of the form to Ms. Wesselhoft AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! They were due by Friday 10/24.

Halloween Costume Guidance

Students and teachers/staff may wear a school appropriate costume on October 31. Costumes may not interfere with learning. This means no masks or costumes that restrict movement or vision, prevent sitting at desks, or prevent participation in physical education class. Additionally, costumes must not obstruct movement in the hallways.

· Costumes may not promote violence or have accessories or props that could be used as a weapon.

· Masks are not permitted.

· Make-up or face-paints are permitted.

· You must be able to sit, walk, breathe, see and hear (no masks that cover the face).

· Costumes cannot promote use of drugs, alcohol or weapons of any kind.

· All school rules will be enforced (i.e., no bikes, skateboards, roller blades, etc.).

· Students should not wear costumes that make fun of others.

We are asking students to only bring 5 or fewer pieces of candy to school. Large bags of candy will be confiscated and returned to students after school.

English and Language Arts with Mr. Winston

This Tuesday and Wednesday, our scholars participated in their first Socratic seminar of the year and they did not disappoint! They shared thoughtful insights from the unit’s readings and came prepared with textual evidence to support their claims. It was a joy to witness their engagement and critical thinking in action.

Next week, we will conclude the unit with an in-class literary analysis essay. This assignment will be entered in the Assessments category on Aspen and will provide a final opportunity for students to improve their class averages. While students will have ample time to complete the essay during class, they are welcome to finish any remaining work at home. All essays are due by Friday, October 31st.

Additionally, students who scored below a 70 on either component of the Summative Assessments (Multiple Choice or Writing) will have an opportunity to improve their grade. I will post instructions for this assignment on Canvas this evening, along with an announcement. This assignment is also due by Friday, October 31st.

All work for the term, including any WS assignments students wish to earn credit for, is due by Friday, October 31st.

As always, please encourage your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night. All students should have a book they are independently reading outside of class.

Library Resources

Our wonderful school librarian, Mr. Reichlen, has created a web collection of school and public library links to supplement the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. The link has now been updated to include texts for Unit 2. Here students can find access points to school and public library resources for recommended texts with additional resources that support unit themes. Students can checkout and place items on hold or checkout digital copies from a device. The collection is updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change. Math with Mx. Gomez

If your student would like to retake a summative assessment (excluding Summative B), they will have the opportunity to do so next week on Tuesday or Wednesday after school.

Please note that I will be out of town on Thursday and Friday, so Tuesday and Wednesday are the only available retake days for the week.

At Deal, we encourage students to take ownership of their learning, and retakes are a great way for them to reflect on their progress and demonstrate growth. Students should come prepared with any questions or areas they’d like to review.

6th Grade Accelerated Math

  • This week in Math 6, students will deepen their understanding of equivalent ratios through a series of hands-on and visual learning experiences. They'll begin by creating equivalent ratio tables and using them to solve real-world problems, including finding unit rates and comparing costs. As the week progresses, students will choose appropriate diagrams to represent and solve problems involving equivalent ratios. These lessons build critical thinking and problem-solving skills while reinforcing the connection between ratios and proportional reasoning.

7th Grade Math

  • In Math 7 this week, students will practice solving word problems involving percent increase and decrease, building on their understanding of proportional relationships. They'll explore key vocabulary and strategies to interpret percent changes in various contexts. Midweek, students will complete the Unit 4 RCT #2 Summative Assessment, demonstrating their mastery of the unit’s concepts. By the end of the week, we’ll begin Unit 1 on scale drawings, where students will learn to interpret and create scale representations of objects and spaces—an exciting transition into geometric applications of proportional reasoning.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft

This week, we investigated colonialism in Sub-Saharan Africa. Students finished the week with DC’s RCT 1. Next week, we will begin learning about the African Diaspora – what is it and what impacts it has on the world. Students will be able to define the diaspora and then investigate people/perspectives of people within the diaspora.

Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan

Hello scientists!

Last week, students wrapped up their Plate Motion unit with their Plate Motion summative on Wednesday. After that, they began their Rock Transformation unit with the Amplify pre-test and a reading about rock transformation.

Next week will include a Gizmo online activity, a rock transformation simulation, our first Claim - Evidence - Reasoning write-up, and a lab in which students get to create different types of rocks using crayons!

October 31st is also the end of the first term. Please support your student in turning in ALL late work before next Friday so it can be graded.

No new Root Words until November!

Notes from MLL Support

Last week students reviewed the key vocabulary from the word bank and finished vocabulary quizzes from respective workbooks from stations and reviewed the questions. We also continue our rotations with HMH and iReady along with teacher-led stations. Next week we will continue with our stations.
