RUN FOR ATKINSON! T-SHIRT DESIGN WINNER

Congratulations to 4th grader Lucia Wheeler on her winning design for the 2026-27 Run for Atkinson! t-shirt this year! It was not easy to choose a winner — all the entries were so great! Thank you to everyone who participated.

T-shirts will be distributed the week of October 12, with the run scheduled for the morning of Friday, October 16 at the Franklin High School track. K–2 students will run from 9:15–10 a.m. and 3–5 students will run between 10:15–11:00 a.m. If you would like to join and cheer the runners on, we would love to have you! Keep an eye out for pledge sheets coming home soon in backpacks!

DON'T PARK IN THE BUS ZONE!

Please remember that parking is NOT ALLOWED in the bus zone in front of the building on Division between 7:30–8:80 a.m. and 2:00–2:45 p.m.

PARENTS, PLEASE DO NOT OPEN DOORS FOR ANYONE

In order to maintain the safety of our building and our students, anyone arriving at the building must ring the doorbell and WAIT to be admitted by the office staff. Students and parents are NOT ALLOWED to open doors for anyone, even if it is someone they know. When non-office staff allow others in, the office staff does not know who is coming in and out of the building and that compromises the safety of our students. Thank you for your help in keeping our students safe!

SELF CARRY MEDICATIONS

Please reach out to the health room if your student carries any medication in their backpack. This includes rescue medications like an inhaler or EpiPen, over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen), lactaid, cold/cough medicine, etc., and prescription medications.

By law, rescue medication is allowed to be carried by any student regardless of age, but all other medications need to be checked in at the health room. If your child carries rescue medication, please let Vanisha or me know, and we'll have you fill out a form authorizing your child to carry it on them or in their backpack. This helps us know what medications are circulating in the school, for everyone's safety.

Thank you!

Warmly,

PPS HONORS ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Orange Shirt Day, observed annually on September 30, is a powerful day of remembrance and education in Canada. It originated from the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor from the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. In 1973, Phyllis was excited to wear a bright orange shirt her grandmother had bought for her first day at St. Joseph’s Mission Residential School. Upon arrival, her shirt was taken away, and she never saw it again. This experience became a symbol of the loss of identity, culture, and dignity suffered by Indigenous children in residential schools.

The Portland Public Schools Indian Education Program will honor Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in solidarity with Native students, families, and communities. This day serves as a reminder of the impact of residential and boarding schools on Native peoples and affirms our commitment that every child matters. We encourage all staff and students to wear an orange shirt to school this day as a visible sign of support and solidarity.

NATURE PROGRAM AT MT TABOR PARK

I wanted to share that PP&R’s Environmental Education department has launched a new program -- the ‘Explore Your Park Series!’ This series is a free, drop-in program for all ages that offers hands-on activities, scavenger hunts, creature features, guided park tours, and more. Events will be 2 hours in length and attendees can drop in to participate for any amount of time during that period. This program will visit a different Portland park each month to learn from and about the plants and animals that call it home.

On Saturday, October 24th from 11:00am-1:00pm, we will be hosting an Explore Your Park Series event at Mt Tabor Park. The park entrance address is at SE 69th Ave. and SE Yamhill St, and we will be located near the playground. We will be learning about bats and other creatures! No need to register, just come on by!

TENNIS AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM

Below is the PPS-approved flyer in English and Spanish. Will you be able to include our flyer in your family newsletter? Our program will run on Mondays from 5:30–6:30 p.m., October 12 through November 16.

The program costs $60 for 6 classes ($10/class), and they offer scholarships on the registration website. Here is a link to the registration page. Here is a link to the scholarship application form.

Thank you so much for your continued support of youth tennis programs!

EMERGENCY DRILLS SCHEDULE

PPS works hard to ensure that all staff and students are trained to respond effectively and efficiently during an emergency at or near school. One of the many ways we accomplish this is through our mandatory drill requirements. These drills are essential in ensuring our school community is as prepared as possible for emergency situations. Atkinson's emergency drill schedule for the remainder of the school year is as follows:

  • Thursday, October 15 — Earthquake and Evacuation
  • Monday, November 2 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Thursday, November 5 — Secure the Perimeter
  • Thursday, December 3 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Tuesday, January 5 — Team Response
  • Friday, January 8 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Monday, February 8 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Tuesday, March 2 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Friday, March 12 — Lockdown
  • Thursday, April 15 — Earthquake and Evacuation
  • Friday, May 14 — Fire/Evacuation
  • Monday, June 7 — Fire/Evacuation
