Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS

Happy Friday Everyone, what a wonderful week it has been! One of the most memorable events from when I was a student at DCS was the parade up the hill. Indeed, that was many years ago, yet the event is still a treasured and special one. Staff have such fun planning our costumes and many years there is a theme; this year we were crayons. It is such fun to see the students as they arrive and realize we are dressed up too! Students arrive in costume and we hike up the hill to Yankee Magazine. The Yankee Staff, Police Department, Town Hall, Library Staff, and AVA and parents meet us and cheer us on as we parade around the parking lot, and yes there are some sweet treats involved. It is a joy to have many community members join us for the festive fun!

We are excited to see parents for conferences on November 5th. Among other information, teachers will share fall assessment data. We have looked at the data and have created groups with specific academic focus. This will help us move them forward in their progress.

Please don't forget to vote! I hope you have a restful weekend, Nicole

Brrr it's Chilly Out there! Brrr it's Chilly Out there!

Please be sure your student(s) are prepared for the fall weather each day. It has cooled off quickly and we have many students unprepared for being outside. We continue to start our days outside and we do go out for recess each day. Many of our students were unprepared to be outside today for Cornucopia and we do not have gear to borrow. Thank you for your help with this!

Kindergarten Kindergarten

Happy Halloween! Kindergarteners are enjoying many different Halloween stories, but the favorite story by far is Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. I used this book to teach story sequencing, a comprehension skill. Ask your kindergartener to retell the story for you!

In math, we've been comparing quantities and practicing using the words "more" and "fewer". They love the math center Number Race game and I love that it provides lots of opportunity for number writing practice! Ask your kindergartener some of the fun rhymes they've learned to remember how to form the numbers- Make and S and close the gate, that's the way you make an 8!

These kindergarteners are becoming readers! It is so much fun to see them making connections on a daily basis and watching their faces light up when they can decode a new word! Happy Reading!

First and Second Grade First and Second Grade

First and second graders continue to progress through new and review phonics rules. We have been learning lots of new vocabulary and are trying to use new words each day. We just filled our vocabulary jar for the first time! Both classes have been learning a new math game called "Square Capture" to help them learn their math facts to 10 for first grade and to 20 for second. The students love it! The students have loved learning about our flag. Ask your child why it has 13 stripes, 50 stars, and what red, white, and blue stand for. We also learned a lot about flag etiquette. Stay tuned to hear more about the U.S. Symbols!

3rd Grade 3rd Grade

The terrific third graders have been super busy with their academics, plus the added activities that help make school super fun. For social/emotional learning, with the Zones of Regulation Curriculum, we thought about how someone can fluctuate between different Zones in one day and how to handle these feelings. The children are also reviewing/learning how to regulate themselves in the various Zones if needed.

In Language Arts, the children are reading a Cam Jansen or Andy Shane story, hoping to inspire them to independently read other books about these characters. They will practice fluency, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. We also began UFLI phonics/spelling lessons reviewing vowel teams, which are always tricky for students. A good review will help with the decoding and spelling of words. The students are looking at the morphology of words using the base word to create new words with new meanings. For writing, the children are working on an Informative Writing project about sea turtles. This week, we are working on our rough draft.

For Social Studies, the class started our unit on maps and the history of the town of Dublin. The children enjoyed creating their maps of Dublin, adding important landmarks and where all the children live. They also developed questions to ask Mrs. Pease about DCS. With these questions and answers, the children will write individual informative paragraphs for their Dublin books.

3rd graders in math are making connections between multiplication and division.

Thank you to all our parent volunteers who joined us for our monthly Friday Hikes and are helping us learn to knit. Knitting is a great organic way to develop grit and stamina for a challenging skill that requires practice. We will be knitting hats to keep our heads warm this winter.

4th and 5th Grade 4th and 5th Grade

4th and 5th graders wrapped up their study of the rotten log with the Harris Center. They reflected on their experiences in writing. In social studies they learned about the 3 branches of government and the election process. 4th and 5th grade math is being ruled by fractions. We continue to monitor the growth of the 4 baby turtles. We will now begin some research on turtles and their habitats.

4th/5th Grade English Language Arts -

The children are grouped into books that I hope will inspire them to read more from that genre and author independently. We are working on vocabulary, fluency, decoding, comprehension, and retelling. We have started an extensive Informative Writing Unit. This week, they are working on their rough drafts of unique places to visit in Seoul, South Korea, with the Mystery Writing team. They also work on the morphology of words, discovering how adding different affixes changes the meaning of the words. Ask your child the words they can build with “act” as the root word and tell you about their reading group book.

Please remember the October reading homework is due on Friday, November 1st.
