Weekly Wildcat-Parent EditionWeek of September 21, 2020

Somerset Families,

At the Thursday, September 17, 2020 Board of Directors Meeting the Somerset Academy Board of Directors and Principals decided that the value of students returning in person for instruction is our primary goal. Under the current limitations imposed by the State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA), our governing board, and current mandates by the Governor of the state of Nevada, schools are limited in their ability to return students full scale to the classroom. At this time, we are permitted to bring back less than 25% of our student population for in-person instruction. As mitigation levels continue to decrease and when Clark County reaches baseline levels, schools will be permitted to return to 50% capacity, allowing Somerset schools to implement our original plan as submitted to the state. The decision of the Board of Directors and supported by the Principals, considering the current restriction are as follows:

  • If Clark County mitigation levels reach baseline criteria two weeks prior to the start of the second quarter, September 28, 2020, schools will prepare to reopen at 50% capacity using the plan submitted to the State Board of Education.

  • If Clark County remains at mitigation level 1 the schools will develop a plan to bring students back addressing the most vulnerable populations in compliance with the State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA) directive, allowing for the return of less than 25% of the student populations at each campus. The priority of students returning will take into consideration our most vulnerable learning populations, to include foundational learners (starting with kindergarten), Special Education students, and the English Language Learners in each school. It is important to acknowledge that the student enrollment varies from campus to campus.

The Somerset Academy Board of Directors and Principals appreciate the support of our communities during this unprecedented time. Each campus will formulate a plan and work with our stakeholders to prepare for students to return to campus. Our top priority remains the safety of our students and staff, and we continue to ask for your patience and flexibility as we work with stakeholders to implement the plans as detailed above.

Sincerely,

Somerset Board of Directors and Somerset Principals

This Week's Focus Habit is Habit 6: Synergize

To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. But it doesn't just happen on its own. It's a process, and through that process, people bring all their personal experience and expertise to the table. Together, they can produce far better results that they could individually. Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One plus one equals three, or six, or sixty--you name it.
