"The Advice Trap" Book Study

April 17: 1:00pm-2:30pm

  • In-Person: Lodgepole at Pendleton IMESD
  • Zoom Meeting Link

To Read before March 20th:section three (pages 180-241)

Discussion Questions for Section 3:

1. Be Generous:

  • Talk with a partner about ways, as a coach, you are generous using the three ways mentioned in the book:
    • Generous silence (What stage do you find yourself in most often? Stages on page 182)
    • Generous transparency (How willing are you to let go of control when you coach?)
    • Generous appreciation

2. TERA: let's revisit
  • Page 123: Tribe/Expectation/Rank/Autonomy
  • This closely aligns with our "Complexities of Helping." How are you coaching with TERA in mind? In what ways is that working? What areas for growth are there?

3. Vulnerability

  • Are you willing to be vulnerable? Are you willing to be coached? Are you making that happen now? in what ways? if not, can you? In what ways?

4. Think about times when it's critical to actually give advice. How are you:

  • Defining it?
  • Diminishing it?
  • Delivering it?
  • Debriefing it?
