Principals Corner
Dear Families,
It’s hard to believe we’re already stepping into December... this school year is flying by! As we enter the final month of 2025, we’re reminded of how much learning, growth, and joy has already filled our classrooms. With just three short weeks until winter break, we’re making the most of every moment, continuing to nurture curiosity, kindness, and academic progress across every grade level.
This month, we’re excited to bring our community together for several special traditions. We’ll kick off the month with our all-school assembly, followed by our PTA-sponsored Donuts with Santa, a special opportunity for families to connect and share in the joy of the season. Our Literacy Night will offer an engaging evening of reading activities, celebrating our students’ love of books and their continued growth.
We’re also looking forward to our Winter Concert, where our talented students will showcase their musical achievements, and we’re thrilled to welcome the BPMS band to BPES as they share some festive holiday tunes with us. Finally, we’ll close out the month with a fun Spirit Week to send everyone into the break with joy and school pride.
Thank you for your continued partnership. We wish your family a joyful December and a peaceful start to the new year!
Campus Conversations
Dear Families,
We’re excited to offer families an opportunity to join us for Campus Conversations this year. This will be a series of informal gatherings created to keep you informed about key aspects of our school community, including academic initiatives, student attendance trends, school culture, and overall campus progress. These sessions offer a valuable opportunity to hear directly from school leadership, ask questions, and stay closely connected to the heartbeat of our campus.
Our next Campus Conversations session will be held virtually on Friday, December 19th at 6:30pm.
Please note: These gatherings are focused on schoolwide updates and initiatives. While we welcome your participation, this is not a setting for discussing individual students or personal concerns. For any student-specific matters, we encourage you to schedule a meeting directly with your child’s teacher or administrator.
Please use this link to RSVP in advance. You will receive the link to our Google Meet once you have registered. We look forward to working together to make this year one of connection, clarity, and shared success!
Grade Level Updates
Pre-K 4
Happy December! We had a fantastic November with many amazing experiences and opportunities for our youngest learners (our outdoor pumpkin patch, math night, buddy class game day, etc) We began to learn about our environment and how to take care of the Earth. We are now focusing more specifically on coral reefs. Students have begun creating different parts of our class coral reef (sand, sharks, fish, coral.) We have a lot more to do! Please continue to send in your recyclables (boxes, toilet paper & paper towel rolls, different shape containers, etc.) Thanks to all who already donated for our projects and crafts! We will learn the letters Ff, Gg, Nn, and Pp. In math, we will focus on numerals 0-10, one to one correspondence, and review shapes.
As the weather is getting cooler, please remember that we go outside daily (as long as the temperature is above 32 degrees). Please be sure your child has appropriate clothing to play outside. We are working on zipping and putting coats on independently. If you could work on this at home, we would really appreciate it! Additionally, please make sure your child has a clean change of clothes at school that is appropriate for the weather.

Kindergarten
Happy Holiday's!
We are having a kind and festive time in Kindergarten! We continue building positive and caring relationships with our friends, especially learning our core value of 'Respect' - how to show respect to others, to ourselves, and to our school.
Literacy
In CKLA Skills, we continue to build our foundational skills to be able to read and write! We will continue to learn and practice basic code in our initial letter-sounds, identify Tricky Words, and continue to read and blend three-phoneme words. In Unit 5 - Skills, we introduce Chaining Folders, which allows students to decode, spell, and read three-phoneme words. Students will also have access to "Pet Fun" and "Ox and Man" to practice reading three-phoneme words and simple sentences.
In CKLA Knowledge, we introduce students to the concept that indigenous people lived on the continents of North and South America long before European explorers visited and settled this area. Students will learn that there are many different tribes of North America, and that each tribe has its own way of eating, dressing, and living, depending on where they lived. Students will use One-Pagers and Graphic Organizers to compare and contrast the food, clothing, shelter, and environment of the Lakota Sioux, Wampanoag, and Lenape. They will also use drawing to identify important characteristics of different tribes, illustrate items used in Native American life, and describe the events in a story by decorating an image of a totem pole.
Math
In Reveal Math, we introduce Ruby, a Veterinarian! In this unit, 2-Dimensional Shapes, we will be learning how to identify and name shapes like triangles, circles, hexagons, squares, and rectangles. We will also learn how to describe the location of the shapes as above, below, behind, beside/next to, and in front of.
Science / Social-Studies
In Social-Studies, we introduce the concept of Making Choices! Students are introduced to "natural" vs. "human" resources within their school environment. Students will use interactive lessons and hands-on opportunities to understand resources, whether they are material or people, play a crucial role in how things are made, used, and managed in a school-setting.
Kindergarten Fundraiser
Reminder! In order to raise money for our Medieval Time field trip to support our CKLA Knowledge - Kings and Queens Unit, we have planned a Shoe Fundraiser! You may send in any shoes, children's shoes, high heels, sneakers, boots, etc. Please be sure to send in any shoes as a pair of shoes! We give a huge thank-you to anyone who can support our students and allow us opportunities to travel outside of the school building to continue our learning!

1st Grade
Hello First Grade families!
We are rocking and rolling into the end of 2024! First Graders have been hard at work learning new skills and becoming awesome readers. We have jumped into the world of Ancient Civilizations in our CKLA Knowledge. We are learning about the ancient people of Mesopotamia and Egypt and how they lived. We finished our addition strategies math unit and are starting to learn subtraction strategies. In Skills, we are learning more vowel teams and how to write a fictional narrative. We have also started spelling words/lists and will have our first spelling test shortly. In science and social studies, we are learning how to be creative and resourceful and honing our problem-solving skills. We will also learn about human and animal attributes and traits. We will also explore culture and different holidays celebrated around the world. Please make sure to check your child’s folder daily so that you don’t miss out on fun things happening.

2nd Grade
Did you catch that breeze? We sure did! The weather is changing so quickly and it’s extremely important that our children are dressed warm, ready for us to explore outside! Please don’t forget we are in Quarter 2 and there’s still so much more learning to do. Thank you to everyone attending the Parent/Teacher conferences. Please know that we are always available whenever you would like to check on the progress of your child. Your support is always important to us. We are all complete with the CogAt testing. Great job 2nd grade!
It was a great pleasure seeing our families out for “Candy Land” Math Night. We hope you enjoyed that hands-on experience, thank you for attending. We are continuously learning various math skills in Unit 5 and Unit 6 from our Reveal math curriculum. We ask that you continue to encourage and practice with your children. Reviewing any graded assignments sent home is a great reinforcement. In CKLA, we have a spelling activity for the kids to complete each night to help them prepare for the spelling test and send home "Take Home" pages as noted from the CKLA workbook. The CKLA curriculum has really sparked an interest in learning about the Greek Civilization during Knowledge time. This encourages our students to express and creativity write paragraphs about the gods or goddesses they’ve learned. This is great 3rd grade readiness! Stay tuned, the new year is approaching. There is so much more to do. We will work extra hard to master many skills we previously learned and practice new ones! Thank you for your love and support!

3rd Grade
Reading
The nonfiction Reader for Unit 4, Stories of Ancient Rome, consists of selections describing the historical events and culture of the ancient Roman civilization. Students will read the legend of Romulus and Remus about the founding of Rome, as well as several myths about Roman gods and goddesses. They will study the historical rise and fall of the Roman republic and empire, as well as key historical figures such as Hannibal, Julius Caesar, and Augustus.
Spelling
During this unit’s spelling exercises, students will review the spelling patterns of r-controlled vowels as well as spellings of the sound /ee/. In Lessons 1–5, students will review r-controlled vowels spelled ‘ar,’ ‘or,’ ‘er,’ ‘ir,’ and ‘ur.’ The spelling ‘or’ will be pronounced /or/ and /er/. In Lessons 6–10, students will review the sound of /ee/ spelled ‘ee’ and ‘e.’ In Lessons 11–15, students will review the sound of /ee/ spelled ‘ea,’ ‘ie,’ and ‘i.’
Grammar
Grammar continues with a review and expansion of skills introduced in second grade. Students will review verb tenses and the verbs to be and to have as well as subject-verb agreement, learning to change the spelling of verbs to match various subjects. Students will have large blocks of grammar instruction each week and instructional time for review in Lesson 9.
Morphology
Throughout Grade 3, students will study word parts, such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words, during the morphology portion of the lessons. In this unit, students will study the common suffixes –er, –or, –ist, –ian, –y, and –al. They will review how suffixes change the meaning of root words and how they may change the part of speech of that word. Students will also define and use words with these suffixes in different contexts.
Mathematics
This month, our Mathematicians are continuing to explore patterns and properties in multiplication as they learn to recall the basic multiplication facts. We will begin Unit 6 and explore the connection between area and multiplication. Recalling basic multiplication within 3-5 seconds is a very important skill students will need to be efficient mathematicians. Encourage your child to practice the 2s, 5s, and 10s facts this month. Students should use homework as a way of practicing the skills we are learning in the classroom. They can work in the practice book that was sent home. (Units 2, 3 and 4)
Science
This month third grade scientists will explore magnetism and how magnets repel and attract. They will begin to explore ecosystems and how being part of a group helps animals survive. Encourage your child to read about a variety of organisms and compare their life cycles looking for similarities and differences.
Social Studies
During the month of December, students will learn about holiday traditions around the world as we research different cultures. Encourage your child to record traditions you have within your family.

ELD
Hello Families,
It was so nice to meet many of you during our parent teacher conferences on November 24 and 25. If you were not able to come during this time and would like to have a meeting, please reach out to one of us and we will make sure to schedule an appointment that works for you.
This month we will focus on preparing students for the WIDA ACCESS. The ACCESS is a test that we use to assess students’ growth in English Language Development. Students will be assessed on their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. We will prepare students by giving them questions similar to the ACCESS.
The domain that is the most difficult for our English speakers is the reading domain because students struggle with multiple choice questions. Please continue to support your students by having them practice their reading daily on the Amplify Hub located on Classlink. On this website, students have access to books they are reading in class.

Community School Information
Hello Parents and Friends,
I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to serve as your Community Schools Program Manager. The Community Schools strategy for the 2025-2026 school year has been to build on and expand the existing programs at BPES. According to your survey responses from last year, many of you wanted BPES to sponsor more family events. An important directive of the Community Schools grant is to be responsive to the needs of our parents. Therefore, Community Schools has played a role in funding: Grand friends Day, Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, Campus Conversations, Title I Math Night, Landscaping Day and several other events. In the month of December, Community Schools will continue to support school sponsored events including Literacy Night and the Winter Concert.
Beginning in the month of January, Community Schools would like to begin a series on Financial Literacy. This series would be 3-4 weeks covering topics such as a Vision Board for Goals, Budgeting, and Savings. There will also be an opportunity to connect with Career Counselors from Anne Arundel Workforce Development. Community Schools is planning a Wellness Fair during the month of February as well as several other family activities for the spring. We are looking forward to your contributions and participation.
Finally, as we’re always trying to improve and update the Community Schools Program, please feel free to reach out with your suggestions. I can be contacted at:
Thank you,
Kevin Randolph

From the Student Support Team
Change of Clothes!
We kindly ask that all students in PreK through 5th grade keep an extra change of clothes at school. Spills, playground accidents, and unexpected mishaps can happen at any age, and having a clean set of clothing on hand helps your child feel comfortable and ready to continue learning without interruption. Please include a shirt, pants, underwear, and socks in a labeled bag, and be sure to update the clothing as the seasons change and your child grows. Thank you for your support in helping us keep students comfortable throughout the school day!
Leading by Feeding
We are excited to announce that this month’s Leading by Feeding Food Giveaway will take place on Thursday, October 9th, beginning at 4:00 PM in the back parking lot. Families are invited to come and receive free food items to help support their household needs. This monthly event is part of our commitment to serving and caring for our community, and we welcome everyone to join us. Supplies are limited, so we encourage you to arrive early.
Background Checks for Volunteers at Brooklyn Park Elementary School
Anne Arundel County Public Schools is committed to providing safe and secure learning environments for all students and employees. Successful completion of a background check is required before any person has access to students, either on or off school property. The Office of Investigations has continued to work closely with the Office of School Security to review AACPS protocols for conducting background checks.
Background investigations are divided into two categories: fingerprint-supported background checks and commercial background checks. Once a fingerprint-supported background check is performed, applicants no longer need to submit an electronic background check. Anyone applying to be a chaperone or volunteer must be at least 18 years of age.
Fingerprint-supported background checks must be scheduled through the Fingerprinting Office at 410-222-5045. The Fingerprinting Office is located at the AACPS Central Office on Riva Road and is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, during the school year. The cost of fingerprinting is $63.00 and it includes the commercial background check. Fingerprint-supported background checks for chaperones should be completed at least 3 weeks prior to the scheduled field trip.
Each applicant requiring a fingerprint-supported background check is provided with a pink Fingerprint Verification Card. This card should be kept with the applicant while on school grounds and should be displayed to an administrator upon request. Each school should keep a running list of chaperones and volunteers that have been fingerprinted.
All questions regarding this process, or to confirm the results of a fingerprint-supported background check should be directed to the Office of Investigations at 410-222-5287.
Commercial Background Check
All chaperones and volunteers without one-on-one unsupervised or unrestricted access to students must complete the online request for a commercial background check. This group is inclusive of PTA and PTO officers, CAC officers, Booster Club officers, and chaperones or volunteers who work with children in the presence of an approved AACPS representative (e.g. daytime field trip to the zoo). These background checks are at no cost to the applicant and are valid for 2 years. All applications should be submitted electronically at least 3 weeks prior to the intended school event.
*Persons without personal computer access may access this process on a school computer or use computers in a public library.
Teacher Snack Cart
Last year we introduced our Appreciation Station Snack Cart to our staff! The cart will be filled every Wednesday full of sweet and salty snacks and drinks to show our BPES staff just how much we appreciate them. This school year we are looking for families to sponsor a week by either purchasing snacks or making a $40 donation so the snacks can be purchased. We ask that donations are dropped off to the school by Monday of the sponsored week. Please consider signing up below! Thank you for helping our staff know how much we appreciate them!
