What will we be learning this week? What will we be learning this week?

Reading

Hi families!
This week, our class is continuing our writing bridge unit where students are diving deep into the components of an opinion writing essay!

Math

  • This week, our 3rd-grade mathematicians are diving into the world of fractions! Specifically, we are focusing on standard 3.NR.4.1, which introduces fractions as numbers and helps students understand them using a variety of models.

The goal of this standard is for students to describe a unit fraction ($1/b$) as the quantity formed by one part when a whole is partitioned into $b$ equal parts. Students will:

    • Understand that a fraction is made up of "unit fractions" (e.g., $3/4$ is $1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4$).
    • Represent fractions using area models (like circles or rectangles).
    • Represent fractions using set models (like a group of objects).
    • Represent fractions on a number line.

    What We’re Doing in Class

In the classroom, we are using several hands-on activities to build a deep understanding:

    • Creating Fraction #Lines: Students are building their own number lines to visualize where fractions live between 0 and 1.
    • Cuisenaire Rods: We are using these colorful tools to explore how different lengths relate to one another as fractional parts of a whole.
    • Sticky Note Number Lines: A fun, interactive way for students to "place" fractions and see how they increase in value.
    • "Just How Hungry Are You?": An activity that explores fractions of a set using real-world scenarios

Reading Specialist

Welcome back, 3rd grade students and families! My name is Mrs. Amanda Montgomery and I will be one of your child's Reading Specialists for this year. I am excited to start this school year by getting to know all of your child's strengths and then making a plan to help them grow as readers. Please do not hesitate to email me (amontgomery@marietta-city.k12.ga.us) or call, if you have any questions or concerns. This is going to be a great year of growth.

3rd grade will start their beginning of the year literacy assessments on August 4th. This process will take about 3 weeks to complete and it is very important for your child to be at school, ready to give their best! Thank you for all you do at home to support us here at school.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Amanda Montgomery

EIP

Reminder: Your student has made multiplication flash cards in class. Please encourage them to study the cards that come home to support strategy modeling in class.

IRR

I am an interrelated special education teacher; I will co-teach in Mrs. Baker and Ms. Castillo’s classrooms this school year. This is my second year teaching, and I am so excited to be teaching 3rd grade again at Park Street! If your child is in Mrs. Baker or Ms. Castillo’s homeroom and has an IEP, I will be their case manager this year. I will be your contact person regarding your child’s IEP needs. Please know that I am here to support your child and communicate with necessary staff information for the implementation of your child’s IEP. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
