Food Drive and Real-World Learning
"Saving Food, Protecting Our Planet, Feeding People"
We Don’t Waste impacts People, Planet, and Prosperity!
Their passion lies with food waste in general and the negative effects of food ending up in our landfills.
"As much as 40 percent of all food goes unsold or uneaten in the United States. Instead of being consumed, this food ends up in a landfill, where it decomposes and releases methane—a greenhouse gas that is 24 to 87 times more potent than CO2. This makes reducing food waste one of the top three ways to reverse climate change."
Our Food Drive is a great time to educate ourselves and open up conversations with all of our students about WHY we recycle, recover food, and compost out of our cafeteria.
Please visit their informational website, We Don’t Waste, and especially their Education and Engagement section to learn more and to help with conversations with your child.
LTE was also just recognized in Sustain DCSD's November Newsletter, highlighting the processes we have in place as students exit the cafeteria after lunch. They reduce waste by recycling, recovering food, and composting as they head out the doors to recess. Thanks to everyone who helps in the cafeteria to make this happen!
