Outdoor Lion's Learning
Francestown Elementary Explores "The World Beneath Our Feet"
Francestown Elementary School recently hosted its November Outdoor Lion's Learning All-School Day, immersing students in the fascinating world beneath their feet. Partnering with Kara Reynolds from the Harris Center for Conservation Education, students explored and dissected logs to uncover the habitats they provide for animals and the role logs play in decomposition.
As part of their monthly routine, students visited their "sit spots," where they closely examined a one-foot square patch of earth. This activity revealed hidden treasures and small details they had never noticed before.
Kelly Marshall also joined the day to help students prepare the school gardens for winter. They learned about the vital role plant stalks play as winter shelters for insects and worked to create habitats to protect these important animals.
To cap off the day, students collaborated on a mural illustrating the diverse life beneath a log and read the book Around One Log, further enriching their understanding of these small yet significant ecosystems.

How Many Minutes Will We Read?
Can we do it again?
Last year, we read a total of 4,363 minutes during our month-long celebration of literacy. This year, we’re taking our reading adventure to “Camp Read-a-Lot”! Students are recording their reading minutes both at school and at home. You can track your minutes online on our read-a-thon website or using the paper sent home. I wonder how many more minutes we can read this year!
Minutes Read: 5,836 or 97.3 Hours

Welcome to Kindergarten with Ms. Curley!
Going to the Parade!
This week in Kindergarten we learned about the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We read Balloons Over Broadway, a story about Tony Sarg, the man who invented the balloons in the parade. Students got to design their own balloon. We also went on a virtual field trip and got to see pictures and videos of the balloons and how they are made!
First and Second Grade with Ms. Sanchez
Practice and Spirit
We had another great week in 1st and 2nd grade. We welcomed Mrs. Mack as our music teacher for this week. In math, we began practicing counting on and showing different numbers using place value disks. In Literacy, we continued working on key details and we continued reading Brambleheart. We also had OLL this week and started a new science unit about plants.
Ms. Parisi's Third and Fourth Graders!
Forts and Dissecting Logs
This week Miss Parisi's class had fun celebrating spirit week! They made blanket forts during indoor recess, and dissected logs in the forest. At Literacy Night they had to build structures to save Twig from a river, and give him a disguise!
