HMS News
Bravo!
Congratulations and great work to all involved in this year's HMS Spring Musical, Matilda.
With over 130 students and dozens of teachers and parents, this production represents the best of what our school can be. The end result of the collective effort of so many people working together is nothing short of spectacular.
A true highlight of this year's show was having our future HMS students from across the district join us for a "sneak preview" of the show on Tuesday of last week. Grade four students were able to visit and see what incredible opportunities await them when they come to HMS in a few short years. I'd like to extend a huge "thank you" to our grade four teachers and the principals of each of the elementary schools for helping to make this happen, not to mention Mrs. Fish and her team, who, when asked to add an additional performance to their schedule, jumped at the chance!
Again, congratulations and thank you to all who helped bring Matilda to life!
Here Comes the Sun!
The 8th Grade Executive Eagles have been working hard to investigate the angles of the sun.
Students have learned that Earth rotates on its tilted axis, which causes day and night. They also discovered that the amount of sunlight each day depends on the angle of the sun in the sky. They will build upon this knowledge for this week's topic; seasons!
Course Override Requests
As a reminder, the deadline for Course Override Requests is next Friday, April 11.
You can request a course placement override by completing the Request for Recommendation Override 2025.
At this point, override requests for current sixth and seventh grade students have been entered into Aspen, and can be checked through the student portal.
MCAS Testing - Grade Seven
MCAS ELA testing sessions will take place on Monday and Tuesday mornings for all grade 7 HMS students. Please make sure you:
- Fully charge your Chromebook and put it in a prominent spot where it won't be forgotten in the morning.
- Chromebooks will be "MCAS-enabled" from Sunday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon, and will have no other functionality during that time.
- SPECIAL NOTE – The MCAS test is on a new platform this year. We noticed with grade 8 testing that several Chromebooks took some time to access this program. It is highly recommended that on Sunday evening you power down your Chromebook and power it back up until you notice the APPS icon in the lower left corner. This may take a few tries, but it will be better to have this process take place at home rather than be delayed on Monday morning. If it doesn’t work after a few attempts we will assist you on Monday morning.
- Get a full night's sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast before school!
- Be on Time!!!!!
- Smile – We got this!
Also, we ask that parents do not dismiss their children on MCAS days unless for a previously planned appointment or a family emergency. Testing will take place during the first 3-4 blocks in the morning and then we will return to our normal class schedule for the remainder of the day.
Poisson d'Avril
Madame Weiss' classes celebrated Poisson d'Avril on Tuesday. It's tradition in France to cut out paper fish and stick them on friends surreptitiously as a joke to celebrate April Fools' Day. The tradition dates back to 1564 when King Charles IX changed the calendar to shift the start of the year from April first to January first. There were some people, however, who hadn't heard or didn't believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April first. Others played tricks on them and called them "April fools." But why the fish, you may ask? The answer lies in the historical context of April 1st falling within the period of Lent, a time when meat consumption was strictly forbidden for Catholics. However, fish was permitted, leading people to exchange fish-themed gifts as a clever workaround. https://www.travelfranceonline.com/april-fools-day-poisson-davril-origin/
It's Good To Be "Out Of The Loop"!
As a reminder, our bus loop needs to be kept clear of all vehicles during arrivals and dismissals.
Students getting a ride home should meet their rides on the sidewalk nearest the main parking lot.

We are very excited about this excellent program that gives Hingham Middle School students the chance to have fun, get outside and experience Track and Field before going to high school. Students will learn new skills and compete against athletes from all over the South Shore. This is also a great opportunity for the HHS athletes to mentor the younger athletes.
We expect up to 200 participants this spring. We would love for them to try as many of these events as possible in this supportive and judgment-free environment.
- Running events: sprints, mid and distance from 100 M run to 1 mile, relays
- Long Jump
- High Jump
- Throwing: Discus, Javelin and/or Shot Put
MANY THANKS to Hingham Sports Partnership for supporting the program through a grant to offset our startup expenses back in 2021! This truly fits in with the mission of HSP, as they continue to find ways to support Hingham sports.
