Principal's Corner

Week of May 18th
Good Morning Killam,
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in support of the Killam School Building Project! We’re thrilled to move forward with the planning process as we work toward providing our students with a safe, functional, and beautiful new school building — and our community with much-needed athletic and shared spaces.
A common question we’ve received is about recess during construction. Rest assured — our students will have time to play! The Building Project Committee is actively working through these logistics and will keep families updated with clear communication every step of the way. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions — and know that a lot of thoughtful planning is happening behind the scenes.
MCAS Make-Ups will take place tomorrow and Tuesday. Then our MCAS season is over!
Our last PTO Meeting is this Tuesday, May 20th at 7:00 pm in the Killam Media Lab AND on Zoom. Please join us!
Have a great week,
Lindsey Fulton, Principal

May is National Bike Safety Month! 🚲🚴🏻♀️
Bike riding is a wonderful way to spend time outdoors and get exercise. However, sometimes accidents happen, and they can be serious. Head injuries occur in about 15% of childhood bicycle-related crashes. To reduce the chance of serious injury, make sure your child wears a bike helmet every time they ride. Statistically, wearing a bicycle helmet decreases the risk of head injury by about 85%, severe brain injury by about 88%, and facial fractures by 31%.
Follow these tips to reduce injuries:
- Make sure your child wears a properly fitted helmet:
- The helmet should cover the forehead, and the straps must be fastened to be effective.
- There should be little movement when your child moves their head from side to side.
- The side straps should come to a point below the ears forming a ‘Y’ shape.
- Your child should not wear a hat under their helmet.
- Replace any helmet that is damaged or that has been involved in a crash.
- Do not buy helmets secondhand. They could be unsafe if they were in an accident, have missing or broken parts, or might not meet current safety standards.
- Be alert and aware! Don’t use headphones or text while riding or crossing the street.
- Confirm that the bike is the right size for your child.
- See and be seen: Make sure your child is visible to cars and pedestrians by having them wear brightly colored clothing or reflective gear and using a bike light if riding at night.

SEPAC Updates
To learn more about Reading SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council), please visit our website: Reading SEPAC Website
Should you wish to receive our monthly newsletter, please send an email to SEPACReading@gmail.com
Please note that Reading SEPAC IS OPEN TO ALL parents/caregivers and not only families who have a child with special needs as we offer various opportunities to connect with other families and provide learning experiences.
Please fill out this brief, anonymous survey to help your SEPAC Board to plan for the 2025-2026 school year. It should only take a few minutes.
This school year we brought speakers to the Reading community on important topics such as literacy success, executive functioning, social emotional learning, school avoidance, the IEP and the special education budget based in large part on what parents highlighted in the annual survey, so it’s very important to make sure your voice is heard.
In addition, your voice helps to steer the conversation between our school leadership and the Reading SEPAC board in our scheduled monthly meetings during the school year. We also want to hear from you on how we are doing in meeting our community’s needs and what more we can do to improve Reading SEPAC.
