Spanish version below.
Dear PMSA Families,
As we settle into the new school year, I continue to be energized by the enthusiasm of our students, the dedication of our staff, and the support of our families. Together, we are building on the positive momentum of these first weeks and strengthening the connections that make PMSA such a special community.
Our priorities remain clear: supporting student success, promoting student well-being, and fostering a school culture where every student feels valued, challenged, and connected. At PMSA, we believe that every student belongs in excellence, and we are committed to ensuring that every student has opportunities to grow, contribute, and thrive.
I encourage families to talk with their students about getting involved in clubs, activities, leadership opportunities, and other experiences that enrich their time at PMSA. Your partnership and continued communication with our school are essential to helping students make the most of these opportunities.
One wonderful opportunity to demonstrate our school pride is the Bridging the Gap Parade on Saturday, September 12. We invite PMSA students and families to join us and ride on the PMSA float. Participants will meet at Proviso East at 8:30am before the parade begins. If you would like to participate, please contact Mrs. Del Real at gdelreal@pths209.org. Additional details will be shared with participants.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping us make this a meaningful and successful school year.
I look forward to seeing our PMSA community continue to learn, grow, and shine together.
Warm Regards,
Dr. Akwaji-Anderson

Staff Spotlight
Ms. Yue
Q: What are you most excited about this school year?
A: I’m excited to be joining a new district. I’m looking forward to blending my past experience with what the school has to offer to specifically meet the needs of our students.
Q: Why did you choose education or your subject area?
A: I was a chemical engineering major in college, and I went on to get a master’s degree in education because I love helping people and teaching people new things. I love helping people learn new things, and I believe learning should be enjoyable and conversational, not just traditional lecturing. I strive to make learning fun, engaging, and meaningful for my students.
Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?
A: I immigrated to the United States when I was a freshman in high school and attended four different high schools in different states. Each time I moved, I became more confident and adaptable. Initially, I knew no English, and I put in a lot of work to learn, including reading textbooks multiple times until I understood them (I only got a C in regular U.S. History despite my efforts.) Because I’ve been through that experience, I understand how challenging it can be to adjust to a new environment, and I hope to be someone students can turn to for support.
Q: What are your favorite hobbies or activities outside of school?
A: I enjoy playing video games, reading, and cruising on my motorcycle.
Q: What is your favorite food or something you enjoy?
A: I love food. I am a huge foodie! Almost all my expenses are in foods/restaurants. I love trying different foods, some of my favorites are Asian barbecue and hot pot.
Q: What would you like students and families to know about you?
A: I strive to support students both inside and outside the classroom. I want to be a mentor and a resource for students and their families in any way I can. My goal is to help students feel comfortable, supported, and confident at school while creating the best possible learning environment for them.

Cool Things Happening
Welcome Back to School
The first day of school was filled with excitement, encouragement, and an incredible sense of community! We were honored to welcome students alongside many parents, our State Representative La Shawn Ford, firefighters, Bishop Reginald Saffo, pastors, community leaders, and school and district staff. Together, we lined the entrance to cheer our students on, greet them with high-fives, and remind them that they are surrounded by a community that believes in their success. With motivational signs, enthusiastic cheers, and an amazing energy throughout the morning, we created a welcoming environment designed to inspire and motivate every student as they begin the new school year. Our principal, Dr. Akwaji-Anderson was especially excited to welcome students and share in the joy of this important first day. It was a powerful reminder that when our school and community come together, we can help our students feel supported, confident, and ready to succeed!
Grade Level Assemblies
Each grade level participated in expectation meetings with the PMSA administrative team. Students heard from Dr. Comfort Akwaji-Anderson, school Principal, Ms. Kim McElroy, Assistant Principal (10th and 12th Grade), and Mr. Matt Sugrue, Assistant Principal (9th and 11th Grade). They reviewed important policies from the student handbook. The team also highlighted incentives for positive behavior and shared valuable resources from our Academic Counselors, College and Career Counselor, Social Workers, and Parent Advocate.
These meetings help ensure that all students are informed, supported, and set up for a successful school year!

A Message from Dr. Akwaji-Anderson
