Mary Hogan Family Newsletter

Update from Principal Jen Kravitz
January 17, 2025
Dear Mary Hogan Families,
You may have noticed in your house, or heard from friends, but there is quite a lot of illness going around, particularly this week. We are doing a lot of cleaning at school as well as ensuring students are washing hands a lot. We are also planning a deep disinfection of the school over this long weekend.
We need your help in keeping illness out of school. Please keep your child home for a full 24 hours after your child's fever ends or after they last vomited or had diarrhea. When you send them early, it makes it harder for us to reduce the amount of sickness.
đź’™, Jen

News from School
Out in Battell Woods
This week, a number of students were out and about in Battell Woods, enjoying the the woods in the winter snow. It was a TON of fun!
This week, 1st graders continued their study of animal adaptations with the help of Shelburne Farms out in Battell Woods. Students engaged a guided exploration of Battell Woods. They searched for signs of animals and studied their tracks. They also learned more about how animals adapt to survive the harsh winter weather.
Swimming
Students in 1st and 2nd grade went swimming at the Middlebury College Pool this week. Their instructors were members of the college swim team. They had a chance to push their own swimming skills or just learn to swim for the first time. This wide variety in swimming levels is typical for each year and the college swimmers do an awesome job of meeting students where they are in their skills!
Wrestling
We were so lucky not only to have swimming this week but all students K-5 had a chance to learn wrestling from Ethan Raymond, the MUHS varsity wrestling coach. Ethan had them moving and grooving to warm up with fun activities and students had a chance to practice a little game to get a taste of wrestling. Ethan let them know if they are interested in wrestling, they can sign up through the Middlebury Rec Dept HERE.
Businesses & Responsibility
Students in 5th grade have been in the midst of an inquiry into businesses and the responsibility each feels to the community and its investors. This week, Miss Jessica's class went to the Middlebury Coop to see if they could find items that were fair trade, a concept they have been looking into. The classes have also been hearing about Ms. Krizo's business, started to reduce plastic waste in shampoo and conditioner, and Mr. Coangeli's business of fair trade coffee. Have a 5th grader? Ask them what they think a business's responsibility should be!
Furs and Skulls
Preschoolers read The Mitten by Jan Brett this week. They have acted out the story along with exploring furs and skulls courtesy of Vermont Fish and Game. The preschoolers have made a lot of interesting observations!
