Week 8 Update
October 2nd, 2026
AP Calculus AB/BC
🏫 Classroom Highlights: AP Calculus Corner
Hello Calculus Families!
🧠 What Did We Learn This Week?
We officially wrapped up Unit 3 and kicked off Unit 4! Since I am out on Friday, our learners have two full days to prep for their upcoming Unit 4 quiz. Our Unit 3 test was 100% Free Response Questions (FRQ), which is one of the hardest adjustments in Calculus. FRQs require complete conceptual mastery and exact mathematical communication. Because of that, scores were lower than many students hoped. Please reassure your learner that this is a normal part of the AP Calculus learning curve! First attempts at full FRQs are tough, but they show us exactly where to focus next. Students will get to see their graded tests on Monday so we can analyze our mistakes together.
Calculus isn’t easy math, but I am fully committed to helping every student bridge the gap. Please encourage your learner to take advantage of my tutorial times—I am here before school (except Wed/Thu), during advisory, during lunch, and during 7th period every day. There is no bad question as long as you ask it!
🚀 Learning Focus: Unlocking Local Linearity & Limit Hacks (Unit 4 Finale)
What's Next?
We are winding up Unit 4 with two incredibly powerful calculus tools:
4.3 Differentials, Linear Approximations & Newton’s Method: Ever wonder how calculators estimate complex square roots or logarithms almost instantaneously? They zoom in on a curve until it looks like a straight line! We'll use tangent lines to approximate hard values and explore Newton's Method to find function roots iteratively.
4.4 Indeterminate Forms & L’Hôpital’s Rule: When evaluating a limit yields an undefined fraction like 0/0 or infty/infty, algebra usually hits a brick wall. Enter L’Hôpital’s Rule—a calculus "shortcut" that uses derivatives to evaluate tricky limits with ease!
📝 Test Corrections: Important Expectation
If your learner scores below 85% on a test, they are expected to meet with me within 3 school days of receiving their test results to complete test corrections.
Available times include:
- Before school
- During Advisory
- During lunch
Please note: I will not be able to provide class time for test corrections.
If test corrections are not completed within the 3-day window, the original score will be entered into Skyward and will not be changed afterward.
For minor grades, learners may complete corrections once to review their mistakes and improve their understanding of the material. However, minor-grade test corrections will not result in an increase to the recorded score.
Learners, please take advantage of this opportunity! Test corrections are not just about improving a grade — they are a chance to identify misconceptions and learn from mistakes. 🧠✨
📊 How Will Major Grades Work This Nine Weeks?
To give students multiple opportunities to show growth while maintaining accountability across all material, we will have 4 major assessments calculated into 3 Major Grades (with the lowest dropped):
Unit 1 Test (50 pts) + Unit 2 Test (50 pts): Combined into one 100-pt grade in Skyward.
CA 1.2: 100 points
Unit 3 Test : 100 points
(The lowest of these 3 final major grades will be dropped at the end of the 9 weeks)
📚 Minor Grades Matter Too!
We will have more than 8 minor grades throughout the nine weeks. Every assignment is important, and I will NOT be dropping minor grades.
Learners, please be intentional about completing all homework and class assignments. Small assignments may seem less significant than a test, but they are where you practice, make mistakes, ask questions, and build the skills needed for success on major assessments.
Consistency beats cramming! 🚀
🧑🏫 Tutorials & Support
Need a little extra help with calculus? I’m here to help!
🌅 Morning Tutorials
I’m available for individual/small-group tutorials: Monday • Tuesday • Friday- ⏰ 8:15 AM
📌 By appointment
Learners who would like extra practice, clarification, or help preparing for an assessment are welcome to schedule a tutorial.
⭐ Mandatory Tutorials
Learners who score below 85% on an assessment are required to attend tutorials beginning Thursday, 09/03, during Advisory.
These tutorials are designed to help learners identify areas of difficulty, correct misconceptions, and strengthen their understanding of the material.
Remember: Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness! 💪📐
🎓 AP EXAM REGISTRATION
Your AP Calculus BC Journey Has a Destination!
As we work through the course, it's important to keep the AP Exam in mind.
📌 Please review the AP Exam registration information in the image below.
Make sure you pay attention to the registration deadline, payment information, and any school-specific instructions provided in the announcement.
The AP exam may feel far away right now — but every derivative, every practice problem, every quiz, and every mistake we correct along the way is helping learners build toward that goal.
One lesson at a time. One skill at a time. One step closer to the AP exam! 💙📈
🌟 A Note to Our Learners
🍽️ Math at the Dinner Table - A Parent conversation starter......
🧠 A Little Math to Chew On
Want to spark a fun conversation with your student about what we're learning? Try asking these at dinner:
"If you zoom in super close to any smooth curve on a graph, what shape does it start to look like?" (Answer: A straight line! That’s the secret behind Linear Approximation.)
"What happens in math when you get 0 divided by 0? How does calculus help us solve that mystery?" (Answer: L’Hôpital’s Rule uses derivatives of the top and bottom functions to find the real limit!)
🛒 Classroom Supplies Needed
Please ensure your learner brings the following required supplies to class every day:
Fully Charged Chromebook: Essential for accessing Webdesk, our BFW eBook, AP Classroom, and DeltaMath during class.
Writing Utensils: Pens and pencils for daily note-taking and working through practice problems.
Note-taking Materials: A dedicated notebook or loose-leaf paper to take daily notes and show work for AP-level problems.
Binder: A 1-inch binder (if using loose-leaf paper) to keep handouts, notes, and returned assignments neatly organized.
Please do...
Daily AP Classroom Practice: Essential for skill-building; these check-ins may or may not be scored for a grade.
BFW Assignments: Accessible directly through Webdesk.

💡 Did You Know?
From Police Radars to Space Travel 🚀
Derivatives are the secret engine behind radar guns used by law enforcement and spacecraft navigation! A radar gun bounces microwaves off a moving car to measure how fast the distance changes over time. That instantaneous rate of change—a derivative—tells the radar exact velocity in milliseconds!
📜 Words of Wisdom
Subhashitam
Sanskrit:
विद्या ददाति विनयं, विनयाद् याति पात्रताम्।
पात्रत्वात् धनमाप्नोति, धनात् धर्मं ततः सुखम्॥
Transliteration:
Vidyā dadāti vinayaṁ, vinayād yāti pātratām।
Pātratvāt dhanam āpnoti, dhanāt dharmaṁ tataḥ sukham॥
Translation:
“Knowledge gives humility; from humility comes worthiness. From worthiness comes true wealth, from wealth comes righteousness, and from righteousness comes genuine happiness.”
Application:
Just like mastering calculus step-by-step requires patience and practice, true learning builds discipline and humility. When students embrace the challenge of understanding difficult concepts rather than fearing mistakes, that dedication carries over into success and fulfillment in every walk of life!
It is a privilege to partner with you through AP Calculus this year! Thank you all for your understanding and support as I recover—I look forward to a fantastic week ahead in our math lab together. If anyone ever has questions, please feel free to reach out.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
