Principal's Panui
Kia ora Parents & Whānau
As we fly through the term, I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone for your ongoing support of our students and school events. We have a few crucial updates, reminders, and action items to share with you this week to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Urgent: Check your contact details
Attendance & Absences
We are closely monitoring student attendance to ensure no one falls behind. Some families may have recently received one or two notices regarding attendance.
- These are mandated letters we must send out when a student has missed 5/10/15 days of school within the term. Regardless of the reason for absence or if you have explained this absence, the letter will continue to be sent once your child reaches each threshold.
- This helps to keep you informed of how absences can quickly stack up.
- Note: If your child has been absent due to a prolonged medical issue, please ensure a medical certificate is provided to the office.
On a positive note, our latest report from the Ministry of Education tells us that we had 53% of our tamariki regularly coming to school which is the highest we have recorded in 5 years! So a big thank you to whānau, staff, tamariki and community for helping us achieve a great milestone in our attendance!
Senior Camp Updates & Fundraising
Planning for our highly anticipated Senior Camp is well underway! These trips are an incredible milestone for our students, but they rely heavily on community support to happen.
Fundraising: We require all parents of attending seniors to contribute to our upcoming fundraising efforts. Every bit of help directly lowers the cost per student.
Stay Informed: To keep up-to-date with camp meetings, deadlines, and opportunities, please make sure you request to become a member of the official Senior Camp Facebook Page.
Carpark Safety
Please be mindful that our carpark is very busy during pick up and drop off. Please attempt to use the pedestrian access and not walk through the carpark during this time for the safety of your child. We have asked BLENNZ to park their cars on the other side of the carpark to allow your child safer access to your vehicle.
Upcoming Teacher Only Day
Please mark your calendars: We have a Teacher Only Day scheduled for Monday, 15th June. School will be closed for instruction on this day as our staff undergo professional development. Thank you for your cooperation in making alternative childcare arrangements.

30km limit during school travel period
New variable speed limits around our kura will be in place from the start of term 3. This means the new 30km/h limit will apply during the start and finish times below (Rochester Street/Dampier Ave).
PNCC aims to have all the new signs installed by 30 June. The changes will increase safety for our tamariki during peak times.
Fulton Hogan may have traffic management in place while they carry out this work (stop/go signs).
Health Notice: Head Lice
Please check your child's hair!
We have identified several cases of head lice across various year levels. To prevent a school-wide infestation, we ask that you check your child’s hair tonight.
Treatment: If you find eggs or lice, please keep your child home until they have been treated.
Support: We are here to help! We have shampoo and combs available at the office for any families who need them.
Check Bags: We have already sent treatment products home with some students today; please check your child’s school bag to see if they have brought these home.
Attendance
Afternoon Pick up
Please wait until 3pm before students are picked up from classes at the end of they day. On occasions when there is an important reason why a student needs to be picked up early, please let the teacher know beforehand (in the morning).
For all children, please ensure they are picked up as soon as possible after 3pm (or 2pm Wednesdays). If you will be late, please let the office know as early as possible. With the office being very busy at the end of the day, it is very difficult to get last minute messages to students about changes to after school plans. Thank you for your support with this.
Every Day Matters: Our New Attendance Approach
This year, you may have heard about the Government’s new Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) framework. Consistent attendance is the single greatest predictor of student success, and our goal is to support every child in reaching "regular attendance" (attending more than 90% of the time).
To keep you informed, we are implementing a tiered response to absences each term:
- 5 Days Absent: We will get in touch to check in, discuss any hurdles, and clarify expectations.
- 10 Days Absent: A meeting with school leadership to identify specific barriers and create a support plan.
15 Days Absent: This level of absence is considered "chronic." At this stage, we are required to involve the Ministry of Education to provide more intensive support.
We know that life happens—illness and family emergencies are part of reality. Our focus is on open communication so we can help your child stay connected to their learning.
Office Reminders
Student Payments (sports, music lessons, stationery)
Parents and caregivers can view their child’s billing statement at any time via the Finance page in Hero. We kindly ask you to check for any outstanding payments, particularly as we enter the winter sports season.
If you have any questions about student billing or would like to set up a payment plan, please don’t hesitate to contact the office.
Payments can be made directly from the app, or by direct credit to the school’s bank account:

Please click here to download the Hero app and login. Follow the steps to sign up with the email address you provided the school at enrolment. If you have any trouble logging in, please get in touch with the school office so we can check that we have the correct email on file.
Communication and Notices
Please keep an eye on the Awapuni Primary School Facebook page and the Hero app for regular updates and notices. If you’re having trouble accessing the Hero app, please let us know — it’s a fantastic tool for notifying us when your child is away, and for staying up to date with what’s happening at kura.
Absences
Parents/caregivers need let the school know if your child is going to be absent for each day they are away during the school term. You can let us know in the following ways, please include the reason for absence so we can record this correctly in our system:
