First Grade Newsletter!
2nd Quarter

A Wonderful Start to First Grade
The first quarter has been so much fun! We have loved getting to know your children, and it has been an awesome start to our school year! We won the attendance challenge and celebrated with Kona Ice, enjoyed lessons with Mrs. Zimmerman, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, raised money for our school during the Fun Run, and participated in lots of fun family activities after school. We have also been diving into our reading, writing, and math and making so much progress! We are so proud of all we have accomplished together and are excited for all the learning and fun still to come! 😊

We will continue going outside for recess as the weather gets colder, so please make sure your child dresses warmly!
We are also practicing responsibility by keeping track of our belongings. Labeling coats, hats, gloves, and other items helps us return lost items to their owners!
What are we learning??? 💡
Math:
In Math, we will work on sorting and classifying objects and shapes, counting and understanding numbers, and building our number sense. We will also begin our next unit on addition and subtraction, continuing to practice strategies for solving problems and understanding how numbers work together.
Spanish:
In Spanish, we will continue to work on reading, writing and speaking!
English Language Arts:
In Shared Reading, we will focus on asking and answering questions, identifying characters, settings, and important events, and using words and illustrations to better understand stories. In ELA, we will read informational texts, find important details, learn new information, and practice writing informative pieces and opinion sentences with supporting reasons. In Fundations, we will continue building our phonics skills by reading and spelling words with blends, suffixes, glued sounds, and vowel teams. We will also practice using these spelling patterns in our writing! Visit the Bookworms Family Letter for Module 2 below.
Science and social studies are integrated into our learning throughout the quarter. We will be assessing and grading students on their understanding of Virginia geography, patriotism and American symbols, and the relationship between the sun and Earth.
Volunteer Updates and Procedures✅
Please be aware that if you would like to be considered as a chaperone for a field trip, WPS policy requires completion of the volunteer background check.
If you are interested, please inform your child’s teacher. Once your request is approved by the school principal, you will receive instructions through email to complete the online volunteer application. After your clearances have been processed and approved by the Central Office, you will be notified.
Please note that completing the clearance process does not guarantee selection for a particular field trip. Approved clearances remain valid for two years.
