October is International AAC Awareness Month October is International AAC Awareness Month

AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes all of the tools, systems, and strategies—ranging from picture boards and communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices—that help individuals who cannot rely on verbal speech to communicate. This month is all about raising awareness, breaking down barriers, and celebrating the many unique ways people express themselves. When we embrace AAC, we ensure that everyone has a voice and the opportunity to connect, share their ideas, and fully participate in our communities.

STEM Supplies Needed STEM Supplies Needed

Our 2nd graders are getting ready for a STEM challenge where they will be designing and building their own coolers! To help them with their designs, we are looking for some materials from home.

If you have any of the following items you are able to donate, we would greatly appreciate it:

• Shoe boxes or small Amazon/shipping boxes
• Packing paper
• Bubble wrap

If your child is in 2nd grade, please make sure your child’s name and HR teacher’s name are clearly written on the box or bag. If you are donating materials and your child is NOT in 2nd grade, you do not need to label the items with a name. Donations can be dropped off in the collection box outside the STEM Room or when students come to STEM.

Thank you for helping us provide our students with hands-on STEM experiences! We appreciate your support!

Reading Olympics Reading Olympics

Hello families of fourth and fifth grade students. All classrooms have been visited by us and we are excited at how many students seemed ready to jump in and participate. Our first meeting is October 27, from 4:15-5:15, we will go over more information about our plans and how to tackle this fun and exciting project!

We will talk about the books on the list, decide who starts with what book and then start reading.

If your student isn’t sure they want to join Reading Olympics, they can attend the meeting and get more information and then decide. However, they still need a permission slip to stay after school. If you have any questions, you can email schmoyerg@casdschools.org

We would love you to encourage your students to join us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Schmoyer and Ms. Zingaro

Student Council Student Council

Student council is ready for their first meeting. Students should plan on staying after school on Tuesday, October 20 until 5pm. Please pick up your student in front of the school. Family members picking them up should prepare to show an ID.

We are looking forward to getting to know the students and promoting our school community.

Thank you for supporting your student.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Schmoyer and Mrs. McNeil

Make A Difference Day Make A Difference Day

Caln Elementary School celebrated Make a Difference Day since 1989. The tradition centered on the entire school working together to support others, typically by selecting a local cause or organization and engaging students in collecting needed items.

The purpose has consistently gone beyond simply collecting donations. It's an opportunity to teach students empathy, kindness, caring, and the importance of giving back to their community. Each fall, students and staff work together during October, followed by a culminating school wide celebration recognizing what the community accomplished together. We are so excited to bring this tradition to Doe Run Elementary School with our inaugural Make a Difference Day supporting the Bridge Academy. Please see the flyer for needed items! Donations will be collected from October 1st to October 23rd. The class with the most donations will earn an extra recess!

PBIS Family App PBIS Family App

This year we are using PBIS Rewards (in place of ClassDojo). We are encouraging all families to download the app and connect with their child's account so that you can see all of the positive points they earn throughout the day! The app also provides a messaging feature that teachers can choose to utilize as well. While email will remain the main source of communication, the messaging in PBIS Rewards is a secondary option. Here is how you can get connected:

  1. Make sure you first download the PBISR Family app (the Purple one)

  2. Then scan the QR code from your child's homeroom teacher into the app to get connected. If you have more than one child, you will need to scan the individualized QR for each child to get connected.

We can't wait to share with you all of the positive things your child shows us throughout each day!

We are also asking families to take two minutes to fill out this quick PBIS survey. While we had a QR code available at back-to-school night, we understand that cell service in the building was not ideal in being able to access the survey so we are sharing the link here. We appreciate your input!
