February 2026
Message from the Principal
Dear Skyline Families,
As we move into February, I want to thank you for the strong partnership you continue to share with us at Skyline. February is a month filled with learning, reflection, and connection, and our students are off to a great start.
Throughout this month, classrooms will continue to focus on strong instructional routines, goal setting, and collaboration. We are seeing students grow not only academically, but also as leaders—showing responsibility, kindness, and perseverance in their daily work. These skills are critical as students deepen their learning and strengthen their confidence.
February also provides opportunities for us to reflect on community, respect, and service to others. As part of our Leader in Me focus, students will be learning about Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. This habit encourages students to listen carefully, show empathy, and consider others’ perspectives before responding. Practicing Habit 5 helps build stronger relationships, improves problem-solving, and supports a positive school community.
This month, we also look forward to parent/teacher conferences, which are an important opportunity to partner together in support of your child’s learning and growth. Conferences allow families and teachers to share information, celebrate progress, and set goals moving forward. Our conference scheduling link will open Monday, February 2nd at 8:00am.
As always, your involvement and support make a difference. Whether through conversations at home, encouragement with routines, or staying connected with school events and communication, your partnership helps ensure student success.
Thank you for your continued trust and support. We look forward to a productive and positive month ahead.
Warm regards,
Erik A. Olson

The Effects of Too Much Screen Time
Today’s children have grown up with a vast array of electronic devices at their fingertips. They can’t imagine a world without smartphones, tablets, and the internet. The advances in technology mean today’s parents are the first generation who have to figure out how to limit screen time for children. While digital devices can provide endless hours of entertainment and they can offer educational content, unlimited screen time can be harmful.
The Negative Effects of Too Much Screen Time
Whether you keep the TV on all the time or the whole family sits around staring at their smartphones, too much time could be harmful. Here’s what some of the research says:
· Obesity: Too much time engaging in sedentary activity, such as watching TV and playing video games, can be a risk factor for becoming overweight.
· Sleep Problems: Although many parents use TV to wind down before bed, screen time before bed can backfire. The light emitted from screens interferes with the sleep cycles in the brain and can lead to insomnia.
· Behavior problems: Elementary school aged children who watch TV or use a computer more than two hours per day are more likely to have emotional, social, and attention problems.
· Educational problems: Elementary school aged children who have televisions in their bedrooms do worse on academic testing
· Violence: Exposure to violent TV shows, music, movies, and video games can cause children to become desensitized to it. Eventually, they may use violence to solve problems and may imitate what they see on TV, according to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
