Together on the Hilltop
At St. Luke’s, community is more than a word we use. It’s something we build — through shared experiences, new friendships, conversations and the simple moments that bring us together beyond the classroom.
We want every student and every parent to know that you matter here. Your voice, your presence and the unique things you bring to our community help make St. Luke’s what it is. That’s why we’re creating more opportunities throughout the year for families to connect, get involved and find their place on the Hilltop.
September brings three different ways to do just that. Whether you’re looking to connect over a good book, get outside and meet fellow St. Luke’s parents, or bring the whole family together for a morning of and fun, there’s a place for you.
📚 Capable Parent Book Club
Gather with fellow parents for good discussion of Capable, by bestselling authors David Thomas and Sissy Goff, and a chance to connect beyond the school day.
🚶 The Hilltop Stroll
Drop off the kids, get some fresh air and take a short walk around the neighborhood with fellow St. Luke’s parents. It’s a simple way to make a new connection and start your day together.
🏃 SNIPSA 5K
Join St. Luke’s families for a morning together at the SNIPSA 5K as we support a great cause and represent St. Luke's in the community.
Check out the "You're Invited" section for more information on our September events. We hope to see you there!

How can you get your name in this drawing next year? Refer a friend to St. Luke’s! If they enroll their child, you get your name in next year’s drawing. Applications for 2027-2028 go live September 3rd, so get ready to refer your friends!
The Hilltop Stroll - Monthly Walking Group
The Hilltop Stroll is a new monthly walking group open to everyone in our St. Luke’s community. No signup is needed—just outside the Jones Lobby and join the stroll. Whether you’re looking for a little fresh air, a chance to catch up with friends or an easy way to meet someone new, we’d love to have you along!
Want to help lead the way? We’re looking for parent volunteers to lead each month’s walk. Sign up below to grab a volunteer slot!
Capable Parenting Book Club
What if parenting wasn’t about having all the answers, but having the right tools? Join Chaplain Sarah Kates for a four-part discussion of Capable, by bestselling authors David Thomas and Sissy Goff, and explore practical strategies for raising capable, resilient kids.
You do not have to read the book to join us! Come for the conversation, encouragement and an opportunity to connect with other St. Luke’s parents. Each gathering will cover a portion of the book, but you’re welcome to join even if you haven’t made it through the chapters.
We'll meet from 8:30 - 9:15 a.m. in the Parlor. Please RSVP below so we can plan for seating, refreshments and printed materials. We hope to see you there!

Week 1: Rethinking Failure
This semester, Rachel Sanborn’s Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Snapshot will feature weekly, parent-friendly takeaways from Jessica Lahey’s book The Gift of Failure. Mrs. Sanborn, along with Student Achievement Coordintor, Donna Finch will wrap up the series with a book talk during the December 1st Parent Council Coffee.
As parents, our instinct is often to protect our children from disappointment, frustration, and failure. Jessica Lahey, Author of The Gift of Failure, challenges us to consider that failure is not the opposite of success—it is part of the process of becoming capable and confident. When we step in too quickly to fix a problem, we may solve the immediate issue, but we also take away an opportunity for our child to practice solving problems independently. This week, try pausing before jumping in. Ask yourself: Is this something my child can figure out with a little time and support?

First Wednesday Returns
St. Luke's Church First Wednesday gatherings for dinner and discussion are back! Just as last year, we will be gathering at 5:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall on the First Wednesday of each month for a delicious dinner, followed by learning and discussion around various interesting topics, while any and all kiddos head off for their own time of fun and formation lead by our wonderful Children's Minister and/or nursery staff. This year, we get to decide our first topic via voting, with the link to cast your vote on the RSVP.
As usual, our wonderful dinners are free to all, though you may make a donation if you are so inclined. Either way, please
RSVP here for September's gathering so that we can have our food and childcare preparations in order.
Questions? Feel free to reach out to the Rev. Eric Holloway, erich@slecsa.org.
