Interdependability

Our school goal is to improve how well our students demonstrate respect toward one another. A prerequisite to learning is a safe classroom culture. Learning how to work together is a skill our students practice.

Fun

Student competitions and "low-floor" activities are strategies teachers intentionally implement to engage our students in learning.

Bell Schedule, Promptness

This is the last week to make any changes to your student's schedules. Requests for changes are taken seriously; and, we may not be able to accommodate all requests due to class sizes and elective availability.

Beginning this week, we will notify you if your student is late from class more than two times throughout the day. This week is "practice week;" beginning the week of September 12, your student will be issued a lunch detention when late two or more times to class.

Your student's schedule includes 8 sections. Of the 8 sections:

  • One section is "Life" which is a daily, 30-minute homeroom class where we teach social-emotional competencies, organizational skills, elicit reflection and learning progress, and host schoolwide assemblies and communication systems.
  • One section is "FLX" which is a daily, 40-minute enrichment or extension section where your student will focus on either a) strengthening/improving lagging prerequisite or foundational skills or b) enriching content knowledge in a specific content area.
  • Six sections are Core Classes which include your student's elective class as well as Math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and PE/Health.

A snapshot of the bell schedule and a student's schedule matrix is posted below.

iReady Reading and Math Diagnostic: Continues This Week

Students will continue engagement in our school's universal screener for Reading - iReady Diagnostic - this week. When finished, students will begin their Math diagnostic.

Your student's scores will guide our decision to enroll - or not enroll - in targeted, specialized sections during FLX to support foundational reading skills or prerequisite Math skills. We will also send you your student's scores in both Diagnostics in mid-to-late September.

Teen Truth Guest Speaker

Estacada Middle School will host a schoolwide assembly about positive school culture and bullying to help establish a foundation and set the direction for the 22-23 school year. We will be bringing in Jared Scott from Teen Truth to present to our students.

In the Spring of 2022 our EMS students reported, on the annual survey, that the area of biggest growth to be made at EMS is students treating each other with respect. To coach, teach, and inspire our students on respect and kindness, EMS is bring in a guest speaker from Teen Truth to speak to our students about these topics.

This assembly - on Tuesday, September 6th - is designed to be impactful to all students as we continue to foster an engaged, respectful culture at EMS. This past Spring our students told us (on the student engagement survey) that students treating other students with respect is one area where we have the opportunity to make the most growth as a school.

Estacada Middle School - RESPECT

Student Voice and Student Engagement

Our students' engagement is important to our school. One opportunity for growth we have set to improve - as indicated by our student engagement survey - is "Students treat each other with respect at my school."

We will focus on fostering an environment in our school which asks students to consider what respectful actions look like and sound like. Please watch this video about our strategic plans to strengthen our students' respect towards one another.
