Always Growing: Read, Read, Read

Our kids continue amaze us everyday. This week, we have noticed the conversations kids are about the books they are reading at home and in school. The vocabulary, questions and insights students have is truly amazing. As you read with your kids at home there are prompts you can use if they get stuck on a word or few question you could ask about what they are reading.

  • What do you think the writer mean when he/she says_____
  • What are important vocabulary words in this book?
  • What things do you know about the character from the way he thinks or behaves?
  • What lessons does the main character learn? How do you know?
  • How do the character’s actions affect the story?
  • What new understanding do you have? What events in the story changed your thinking?
  • Why do you think the character did (or said) that?
  • What do you think the character might be feeling right now? How do you know?
  • Who is telling the story? What clues give you that information?
  • What did you learn about life from this book?
  • Is this a book that will stick with you? What makes you say that?
  • What do you think this book was trying to accomplish? Do you think the author succeeded?

On October 14, Dr. Jess Shatkin, a leading expert in child and adolescent mental health, will offer insights to help DCS parents and staff support and protect our children. Local officials and organizations will also be on hand to share information about available resources and services. Space is limited, so reserve your seat here.
