Grade 7 Cooters have arrived!

The Cooters have arrived in 7th grade at DMS!!!! 7th graders are helping to give back to the community at large by headstarting this species. The Northern Red-bellied Cooter (Pseudemys rubriventris; “NRBC”) has been listed federally as Endangered since 1980, when fewer than 300 individuals were estimated to occur in the wild in Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Since 1985, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) has managed a headstart program for the species in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), in which roughly 100–150 hatchling NRBC are retained over the winter season to increase their mass prior to release. Each year the headstart program relies on the volunteer participation of 15–25 schools, museums, non-governmental organizations, and key landowners in southeastern Massachusetts. The headstart project is authorized through a federal recovery permit from the USFWS, through which the wildlife agencies strive to meet the recovery objectives set forth in a federal recovery plan. MassWildlife ensures compliance with the conditions of the federal permit, including annual reporting requirements.

Grade 8 Hero Unit

Have you ever dreamed of being a superhero? Well, this year’s Grade 8 is having that wish fulfilled- sort of… In Grade 8 ELA we are creating our own superheroes and then learning about the hero’s journey through an interactive role-playing game known as MASKS. In the game students will interact with their teachers and specialists playing the roles of super villains and antiheroes as the student’s teams try to save the residents of Halcyon City. The administration is in the game as our superheroes backup and police force known as AEGIS.
