From Principal Lakin's Desk
Hello Davisburg Community,
We have been busy at Davisburg since returning from Spring Break, and I certainly hope all of our Davisburg families had a wonderful break. It was great seeing our students back last Monday.
Last week, we began M-STEP testing with our 5th graders taking the Math assessment, and as of today, only two students still need to complete it. Our 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Swalwell and Mrs. Wanamaker, have done an amazing job preparing students for these assessments in a fun and engaging way through an M-STEP Bootcamp. Students earned promotions as they built skills and strengthened their learning in math, ELA, science, and social studies, which is my personal favorite as a forever social studies teacher.
This week, our 4th graders began their M-STEP journey by taking the ELA assessment, and only a few students remain to complete it. On Thursday, our 5th graders also took the Social Studies assessment and did a great job.
This past Wednesday, we also had a fantastic turnout for our Family Engagement Night. It was great to see so many of our students and families having fun while exploring STEM and science activities, thanks to our wonderful partners from the Sloan Museum. A special thank you goes out to our high school volunteers who assisted with setup and teardown, all of the staff members who came out to support the event, and especially to Mrs. Rauchfleisch for planning such an amazing experience for our students and families. She truly goes above and beyond and is always doing what is best for our Davisburg community.
I am so thankful for all of the teachers and staff at Davisburg who have gone above and beyond to make testing such a smooth process.
Looking ahead, here is our remaining M-STEP testing schedule:
April 21 – 5th Grade ELA
April 22 – 4th Grade Math
April 23 – 3rd Grade ELA
April 28 – 5th Grade Science
April 30 – 3rd Grade Math
Make-up testing will take place over the next three weeks to ensure every student has the opportunity to complete these required state assessments.
M-STEP testing is important because it helps us understand how well students are mastering grade-level standards and allows us to adjust instruction to better meet their needs. It also provides valuable information about how our school is performing and how we can continue to grow and improve as a learning community.
Families can play a big role in helping students feel confident and prepared. Here are a few simple ways to support your child at home:
• Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep before testing days
• Provide a healthy breakfast each morning
• Encourage a positive mindset and remind them to simply do their best
• Talk with your child about taking their time and carefully reading each question
• Help reduce stress by keeping morning routines calm and consistent
April 28 is also Bus Driver Appreciation Day, and we want to take a moment to recognize the incredible work of our bus drivers. They are often the first and last school representatives our students see each day, and they play a vital role in ensuring our students arrive safely, feel welcomed, and start and end their day on a positive note. We are grateful for their dedication and the care they show to our Davisburg students and families.
It is a privilege to serve as your principal, and I remain deeply committed to supporting our students, championing our outstanding staff, and strengthening our partnership with you, our families.
Thank you for your continued partnership. It has been so nice to finally have sunshine and warmer weather, and I know our students have been loving it during recess.

Car Line Reminder: Keeping Everyone Safe & Moving Smoothly
As we continue working together to ensure a safe and efficient start and end to each school day, we wanted to send a friendly reminder about our car line procedures for drop-off and pick-up.
Morning Drop-Off:
- Please enter the front car line loop and pull all the way forward to help keep traffic off Davisburg Road.
- Once staff are outside, students may exit from the passenger side only.
- For safety, parents should remain in their vehicles.
- Students will walk directly to breakfast or head to their classrooms.
Afternoon Pick-Up:
- Please remain in your vehicle and follow the car line to the designated loading area.
- Be sure to display your family name sign in the front window to help us load students quickly and efficiently.
- Students will wait in the designated area until their ride reaches the loading zone.
- For safety and traffic flow, students will enter vehicles from the passenger side only.
- Please note: Office pick-up is no longer available. All students will be dismissed through the car line or bus.
We truly appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a safe, smooth, and efficient process for all of our students. Thank you for doing your part to support our Davisburg community!
Leader in Me & Core Competencies
Leader in Me Section: Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw
Sharpening the Saw is about having a balanced program for your life. This creates and maintains well-being in four areas: physical, social/emotional, spiritual and mental. Without taking care of all four, you are out of balance and are unable to be your best self.
Sharpening the Saw includes that you will take care of yourself inside and out. You will eat right, exercise and get plenty of sleep. It also means that you will find a way to help others and spend time with your family and friends. Sharpening the Saw includes continuing to learn and try new things.
Ways to practice Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw at home: Play a game, put together a puzzle or have a time that everyone at home is reading. You could make a commitment to eating healthy, exercising together as a family or visiting a new and different place. Another great Sharpening the Saw activity is community service or doing something to enhance your neighborhood. If you need more ideas, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
