PS 199Q Newsletter

A Message from Principal Daliposki
Dear PS 199Q Families,
This week, we recognized students who had perfect attendance from September through December. Regular attendance is crucial for elementary students as it ensures academic success by preventing gaps in learning and builds of a strong foundation for future education. Beyond academics, consistent attendance fosters social development, helps establish routines and discipline and instills essential life skills such as punctuality and responsibility. Additionally, the parents play a key role in ensuring their child's regular school attendance, contributing to a positive and well-rounded educational experience. Should you have any questions about attendance, please contact Ms. Becco (sbecco@schools.nyc.gov).
The winter season coincides with an increase in viruses and other illnesses within school communities. Please review Health Guidance and Resources for Families.
Stay Home When Sick: Rest can help you and your child get better sooner, and it helps prevent the spread of germs.
- Anyone with a fever should stay home until 24 hours after being fever free or until their doctor says it is okay to go back to school or daycare. They should stay home for at least 5 days if they are diagnosed with COVID-19.
- Please note that based on your child's symptoms, your school nurse may determine your child must stay home for other reasons based on their professional judgement.
- If your child has symptoms of COVID-19, please see guidance

Safer Access
Below is the family, which was sent on December 18, 2023. Effective Thursday, February 1st, the Safer Access system will be operational. The primary objective of the Safer Access system is to ensure that all doors remain locked outside of the morning-entry and afternoon-dismissal periods. When school doors are locked, visitors wishing to gain access to the building will ring the intercom at the main entrance door (or ADA-accessible entrance if applicable) and identify themselves before access is granted into the school building. Safer Access allows our dedicated staff assigned to the main desk (School Safety Agents and/or school staff) to be able to see and speak with visitors before granting them access inside. Please be assured that all visitors to our school will continue to be treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect while awaiting entry into our building. In addition to enhancing safety, this system allows for easy access for first responders during an emergency. To support parents with this system, a parent informational session will be held on Wednesday, January 31st.
Important Update from NYC Schools
Dear New Yorkers,
When I talk about reimagining education, I often think of the real-world skills our children need to thrive in today’s society. One practical skill that is critically important—and too often overlooked—is financial literacy, which ranges from how to create a budget to how to invest in the stock market.
We teach our high schoolers personal finance in a number of ways. Our career connected learning programs, such as FutureReady, Modern Youth Apprenticeship, and CTE, all incorporate financial literacy, as do many other schools, whether during advisory, via themed workshops, or using innovative online platforms.
But we know these skills are not just for high schoolers. That’s why, in NYC Public Schools, financial literacy begins as early as kindergarten. Two years ago, we expanded the Save For College Program citywide in partnership with NYC Kids RISE and the City. Today, over 200,000 elementary students have NYC Scholarship Accounts with nearly $30 million (and counting!) for college and career training. This means nearly every kindergarten, first, and second grader in NYCPS has a free account, with an initial $100 investment from the City.
It is never too soon to start saving, and I encourage all our families with students in grades K-2: activate your child’s account today. To learn more, check out these family resources, watch this welcome video, or attend aZoom information session with live interpretation in your language.
Now for our high schoolers, saving for college or career training can feel even more pressing. But we are here to support. NYCPS offers free, one-on-one virtual advising sessions for high school families, led by trained, multilingual educators, on Tuesdays through Fridays, from 5-8pm. These advisors can also help students complete the FAFSA® form and apply for New York State’s Tuition Assistance Program.
Families and NYCPS staff, I urge you to talk to your students about these critical action steps, especially as the season for college and career decision-making approaches. And know that whether your student is a kindergartener or a 12th grader, we are here to help them save for their futures—and to bring those financial literacy skills wherever life takes them.
Soaring high,
David C. Banks
Chancellor

2023 NYC SCHOOL SURVEY
2023 NYC School Survey
On February 13, 2024, the 2023 NYC School Survey opens. We are once again looking forward to getting your feedback regarding how we are doing. Here is some guidance about this year’s survey campaign. You must complete a separate survey for every child you have attending a New York City Public School. The simplest way to access the survey is through your NYCSA account. There will be a link to the survey in your NYCSA account on February 13th. This year, you will not receive a confirmation email once you’ve completed. You will receive a flyer with more information and a completion tear- off. Please complete the tear – off and return it to school. Teachers will keep track of which students in their class has completed. The first class in every grade will receive a reward for 100 % participation in the survey. You can also go to the link below and enter your child’s Osis number to access the survey. The survey is accessible on any device, cellphone, tablet, etc. On February 26th, we will send home paper surveys for all families that have not completed the survey online. This year we are aiming for 100% participation. Please do not miss this opportunity to have your voice heard.

Important Information
All Kindergarten Families and new NYC Public School System Grade 1 & 2 Families
Dear Parents/Guardians:
In school year 2023-2024, every kindergarten, first grade, and second grade student enrolled in NYC public schools is eligible to participate, no matter their family income or immigration status.
The NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program provides families, schools, and communities with a way to work together to save for their children’s futures. It’s a scholarship and savings program designed to make college and career training more accessible and achievable for all NYC public school students, starting in kindergarten.
Good news! If your child is eligible, they will be automatically enrolled in the Save for College Program unless you choose not to participate and opt out. As long as you take NO ACTION during the Opt-out Process, your child will be automatically enrolled and receive a free NYC Scholarship Account. If you do not wish to participate, please visit the NYC Department of Education website for more instructions on how to opt out. Families have 30 days to opt out if that don't want to be included in the program and have their student's data shared with NYC Kids RISE.
For more information about the program and to complete Building Block 1, contact Ms. Becco for an appointment during her office hours.
Resources
Resetting Password
Resetting your child's Google password tutorial
Resetting your child’s Google Classroom Email Password.
- Go to the Department of Education website: schools.nyc.gov
- Scroll down to the Technology for Families section and click onto STUDENT tab.
- Click onto the menu option: Resetting your child’s password and then under that will be the instructions to create a pin for the account. You will need your child’s osis number and you can get that from your child’s teacher or even the main office. Ms. Becco can give it to you also, just email her at sbecco@schools.nyc.gov.
- After changing the password and creating a pin, go back to the homepage and click "teachhub" on the top right side of the toolbar. You may or may not have to sign on again.
- A remember that the username is everything before the @ symbol in the email address and the password is case sensitive.
- Once you get into the teachhub, you may not see much, and if that is the case, you should then click on the heading that includes your child’s grade, next to the Welcome.
- You will then see a host of apps that your child may need access to, for example: Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meet, Gmail, etc.
