Community Potluck Dinner
Our annual Community Potluck hosted by El Puente Beacon is on Wednesday, November 19th from 5-7PM. Join us to celebrate our school community with food, performances and more! We will also have the PTA meeting at 6PM during the meal. There will be a registration form sent in next week's newsletter which will also ask if you are able to bring a dish to share. Contact the Beacon director Evelyn Carela with any questions.
Food Support for SNAP Cutoff
At MS 50 and all New York City Public Schools, ensuring all students have access to a free, healthy, and nutritious breakfast and lunch is always a top priority and this will not change. We know that SNAP disruptions will affect many in our school community and we want to provide resources to help our families navigate this moment. Go to ms50.org/foodsupport to find resources to access food pantries near you.
PTA Food Support Fund and Food Drive
The PTA has launched a food drive to help support MS 50 families! There is a box in the main entrance where you can drop off canned goods and other non-perishable items, or you can contribute monetarily directly to the campaign. Thank you for supporting our community – we are family!
Halloween Dance Photos
We had a blast at the Halloween Dance last Wednesday! From the incredible costumes to the great dance moves, it was an afternoon to remember! Thank you to the PTA and all families who donated snacks and drinks to make the day special and inviting. Families, click the button below to view the full photo album!
Latinx Heritage Celebration Lunch
We are seeking donations of finger foods for our Latinx Heritage Celebration during students' lunch periods on Wednesday. Click on the flyer below for information on how to donate or you can donate directly to the PTA online! Contact Ms. Edda for more details.
Classroom Spotlight: Electives
Visual Art
6th graders have recently swapped into their new elective to try out either visual art or music. In visual art 7th grade students have just finished learning and practicing different drawing techniques. They have started their final projects drawing a person or object that is important to them. In 8th grade students are working on completing their pieces for their high school portfolios or completing their final project for the 8th grade showcase.
Band and Music
7th graders have been working on establishing their rehearsal routine and expanding on their fundamentals while refining their piece “Prehistoric Suite” for the Winter Concert in January. 8th graders have been working on advanced fundamentals as well as their concert repertoire for their Winter Concert “Union March” and “Joy”, and will be adding a 3rd piece very soon.
Physical Education
In PE this week we are starting the team handball unit! Our first skill in this unit is passing. Students will be learning how to perform an underhand pass and an overhand pass. They will practice these skills in a series of drills and then will apply what they learned in an activity that will simulate game-like scenarios
Dance
In Dance , the students are working on the following choreographies: DTMF by Bad Bunny, Let The Groove Get In by Justin Timberlake, Don’t Mean A Thing by Club Des Belugas, Senorita by Justin Timberlake, Wanna be startin something by Michael Jackson, and This is For by Twice. Every class we add on 4-6 new Eight Counts of hip hop , jazz or ballet technique .
Spanish Office Hours
We’d love for you to join our bilingual team’s weekly open space with Ms. B and parent coordinator Edda and Parent Organizer Teresa—a time to connect, ask any questions, request resources, and build community together. This weekly Zoom meeting will take place every Tuesday at 7PM. Join at ms50.org/martes.
Housing Questionnaire
Hello MS 50 Families! Are you and your family living in temporary housing or will be in the next month? (For example, shelter, hotel/motel, car, abandoned building, with another family?) Please fill out the questionnaire in your preferred language. If you have already filled out the questionnaire on Operoo, no further action is required. You can either print this completed form or email it to our social worker Ms. Alex.
Charter School Mailing Opt-Out
NYCPS is offering all parents the ability to opt out of receiving charter school informational mailings produced by Vanguard. The DOE shares students’ names, parents’ names, mailing address, zip code, and grade level with a vendor named Vanguard. Vanguard then mails school information to families. Charter schools also use this vendor to mail informational materials on their behalf. If you do not wish to receive these notifications, please complete the form by clicking the button below.
High School Application Information
High School Applications are Open!
The high school application is open from now through December 3rd. MySchools account creation codes were sent home to all 8th grade families. If you have not received this information, please check with your child for the paper or contact our guidance counselor, Ms. Sostre, for assistance.
School Tours
There are lots of upcoming school tours for current 8th graders! Click the button below to access all of the high school flyers and tour dates that are shared with us. We will update this folder whenever we receive additional flyers. We also have a Google Sheet available with updating lists of school tours broken down by borough.
Application Workshop
Thank you to Principal Honoroff for leading a high school application workshop for our 8th Grade Families during virtual curriculum night! You can find all of the links that were shared on our Google Slides presentation. You can also rewatch the application workshop online! Feel free to reach out to your child's homeroom teacher with any questions.
