Principal's Message Principal's Message

Greetings, Patriot Families,

Happy New Year! We’ve had a strong and productive first full week back with students, and it has been wonderful to see our classrooms buzzing with learning and engagement.

This week, our teachers also participated in collaborative planning focused on strengthening instruction for the second semester. During a half-day planning session, teams worked intentionally to align lessons, reflect on student needs, and ensure consistency across grade levels—all with the goal of better supporting student growth and success.

Next week, students will take the i-Ready Diagnostic Assessments in both reading and math. Students will complete the Reading diagnostic on Tuesday and the Math diagnostic on Thursday. These assessments help teachers understand each student’s current skill levels and guide instruction and support.

Teachers will review students’ previous i-Ready results and explain growth expectations, including typical and stretch growth. We are encouraging students to do their best, and we will be celebrating student effort and growth with positive incentives.

Thank you for supporting your child by ensuring they arrive rested, on time, and ready to show what they know.

We appreciate your continued partnership and support. Together, we are building a year filled with purpose, growth, and success for our BMS students.

With Patriot Pride,

Felecia Jones

Principal

Important School Transitions: Kindergarten, Middle School & High School

As we move through the school year, we want to take a moment to highlight the importance of school transitions—whether your child is moving to Kindergarten, Middle School, or High School. These transitions are exciting milestones, but they can also bring many questions for students and families.

Transition nights are designed to help families learn what to expect at the next level, including academic expectations, schedules, electives, support services, extracurricular opportunities, and ways families can stay involved. Attending these events helps reduce anxiety and ensures a smoother transition for students.

We strongly encourage families to attend the transition night offered by your child’s upcoming school.
For example:

  • If you have a Kindergarten-bound student, attending the Kindergarten Transition Night will help you understand routines, readiness skills, and how to best support your child at home.

  • If your child is transitioning to Middle School, these events help families learn about schedules, electives, and increased independence.

  • If you have an 8th grade student moving on to High School, January 20th is a perfect opportunity to attend the High School Transition Night, where you can learn about graduation requirements, electives, clubs, and academic pathways.

These transition nights are one of the best ways to prepare both students and families for what’s ahead. Your participation makes a big difference in helping your child feel confident and supported as they move to the next chapter of their educational journey.

If you have any questions or need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help!

Thank you for your continued partnership and involvement.

Hunger Hurts Attendance “No One Can Learn or Work on an Empty Stomach”

Many families in our community are facing hunger. Food insecurity affects attendance, focus, and overall well-being. In Georgia, one in seven children experiences food insecurity, which can make it hard to thrive at school or work.

If you are struggling, you are not alone. Asking for help does not make you a bad parent or a bad person. Even families who seem well-off can face challenges. Reaching out for support shows strength and care for your family. Our community is here to help

Berkmar Middle is a Power Down School

One of the integral parts of creating a harmonious and distraction-free learning space is our "Power Down" electronic device (cell phones, airpods, headphones, etc.) policy. We understand the importance of technology and staying connected in our modern world. However, during school hours, the focus should be on learning, collaborating, and being present.

Should there be an emergency or an urgent concern to communicate with your child, please reach out to the school's main office. We will ensure your child receives the message promptly.
