Embracing the "What Ifs": Finding Excitement in Uncertainty
Dear Middle School Caregivers,
As we navigate the final trimester of the school year, a mix of emotions is natural. Excitement for summer break might be bubbling, alongside perhaps a touch of anxiety about upcoming unit assessments, transitions, and the unknown that lies ahead. It’s in this very space of uncertainty that we have a fantastic opportunity to teach our scholars a vital life skill: finding excitement in the "what ifs."
Often, uncertainty feels uncomfortable. It can trigger worry and a desire for everything to be predictable. However, it’s precisely when things aren't perfectly clear that we are pushed to grow, adapt, and discover strengths we never knew we had. Think of it like this: a smooth, predictable path rarely leads to innovation. It's the bumps in the road, the unexpected detours, that force us to recalibrate our course, to brainstorm creative solutions we would have otherwise never considered, and to seek support from those around us.
This final trimester, with its looming end-of-year projects, changing seasons, and the anticipation of what comes next, presents a perfect landscape for embracing this mindset. Let’s encourage our middle schoolers to view the unknown not as a threat, but as an adventure waiting to unfold.
Here's how we can help them find the excitement in uncertainty:
- Reframe Challenges: When your child expresses anxiety about an upcoming change or challenge, instead of immediately trying to fix it, ask open-ended questions. "What are some different ways you could approach this?" or "What could be a surprising positive outcome of this situation?" This helps them shift their focus from potential negative outcomes to exploring possibilities.
- Highlight Past Successes: Remind them of times they faced uncertainty before and how they successfully navigated it. Point out the skills they developed and the resilience they demonstrated. This builds confidence in their ability to handle future unknowns.
- Encourage Collaboration: Uncertainty often necessitates teamwork. Encourage your child to talk to their classmates, teachers, and even you about their concerns and ideas. Collaborative problem-solving not only leads to better solutions but also fosters a sense of shared experience and support.
The Anchoring Power of Routines:
Amidst the ebb and flow of uncertainty, routines provide a vital sense of stability and predictability. They act as anchors, offering comfort and structure, especially during times of change and transition.
Here’s how we can normalize and participate in building routines:
- Collaborative Creation: Involve your child in establishing daily and weekly routines. This gives them ownership and makes them more likely to stick to them. Discuss consistent times for after school activities, meals, bedtime, and downtime.
- Visual Reminders: Visual schedules or checklists can be incredibly helpful in reinforcing routines.
- Lead by Example: As parents, our own routines can serve as a powerful model. When children see us valuing structure and consistency, they are more likely to do the same.
- Flexibility within Structure: While routines provide stability, it's also important to build in some flexibility. Acknowledge that unexpected things happen, and teach your child how to adapt their routines when necessary without feeling completely derailed.
- Communicate and Adjust: Regularly check in with your child about how their routines are working. Be open to adjustments and modifications as their needs and the demands of the school year change.
Implementing Routines When Change is Imminent:
The beauty of routines is that they equip us to handle change more effectively. Even as we approach summer break and the inevitable shift in schedules, the routines established during the school year provide a foundation.
- Gradual Transitions: As the trimester winds down, discuss the upcoming changes in routine. Instead of abruptly ending all structure on the last day of school, consider a gradual easing into summer schedules.
- Maintaining Core Habits: Encourage your child to maintain some core habits, like a consistent sleep schedule (even if it shifts slightly later) and regular reading time, throughout the summer.
Caregivers, this final trimester is a valuable opportunity to empower our middle schoolers. By helping them find the excitement in uncertainty and by providing the grounding force of routines, we are equipping them with essential skills for navigating not just the end of this school year, but the many unknowns that life will inevitably present. Let’s work together to make this a period of growth, resilience, and perhaps even a little bit of thrilling discovery.
Help Shape the Future of District 65 - Join us April 10, 11, and 15
By July, District 65 will have reduced nearly $20 million from the annual budget in two years, but more work remains. For several years, district leaders and board members have discussed in public meetings the potential need for school closures or consolidations. This is in response to an aging population within our community, declining student enrollment, underutilized buildings, and dated facilities.
While this process will surely be difficult, it represents an opportunity to reimagine and reinvest for the future of public education in Evanston/Skokie. No decisions have been made regarding additional school closure/consolidations. The District is in the early stages of planning, including developing potential criteria. See more information
The goal is to engage parents, caregivers, staff, students, and community members in a transparent process with clear criteria. Decisions must be made with integrity and rooted in data and community voice.
As such, District 65 invites you to attend an upcoming community conversation:
April 10, 6:30-8 p.m. at Chute Middle School (1400 Oakton St.)
April 11, 9:30-11 a.m. at Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center (1655 Foster St.)
April 15, 6:30-8 p.m. at Nichols Middle School (800 Greenleaf St.)
Spanish interpretation will be provided. Can’t attend in person? Share your thoughts virtually by 11:59 p.m. April 15, 2025.

Social Media Detox
Helping your child detox from social media is a significant step towards improving their mental well-being, focus, and real-life connections. If you are desiring to introduce a social media detox, here are some steps that you can take:
1. Open Communication and Setting Goals:
- Have a Calm Discussion: Start by talking to your child about your concerns regarding their social media use. Frame it out of care for their well-being, not as a punishment. Listen to their perspective and acknowledge how important these platforms might feel to them.
- Identify the "Why": Discuss the reasons for wanting a detox. Is it impacting sleep, schoolwork, mood, or family time? Help your child recognize these connections themselves.
- Set Achievable Goals: Work together to establish realistic goals. A complete, sudden ban might be difficult. Consider starting with:
- Reduced Time Limits: Gradually decrease the amount of time spent on social media daily or weekly.
- Specific Time Restrictions: Designate social media-free hours (e.g., during meals, homework time, before bed).
- App-Specific Detox: Focus on reducing time on the most problematic apps first.
- "No-Tech" Zones: Establish areas in the house (e.g., bedrooms, dining table) where devices are not allowed.
- Scheduled "Digital-Free" Days/Weekends: Plan specific periods with no social media use.
2. Gradual Implementation and Alternatives:
- Start Slowly: Abruptly cutting off access can lead to resistance. Gradually implement the agreed-upon limits.
- Turn Off Notifications: Encourage your child to disable push notifications from social media apps to reduce the urge to constantly check their phone.
- Replace Screen Time with Activities: Help your child discover and engage in alternative activities they enjoy. This could include:
- Hobbies: Sports, music, art, reading, writing, coding, etc.
- Outdoor Activities: Hiking, biking, playing in the park.
- Social Interactions: Spending time with friends and family offline.
- Creative Pursuits: Painting, drawing, building, playing musical instruments.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises.
- Create "No-Tech" Family Time: Plan activities the whole family can enjoy together without screens, such as board games, movie nights (without phones), cooking together, or going for walks.
3. Practical Strategies and Tools:
- Utilize Parental Controls: Most smartphones and social media apps have built-in parental control features that allow you to set time limits and restrict access. Explore these options together with your child to foster transparency.
- Consider App Limiters: There are third-party apps available that can help track and limit screen time across various applications.
- Keep Devices Out of Sight: When not in use, encourage your child (and model this yourself) to keep phones and tablets in a designated place, out of easy reach and sight.
- Lead by Example: Your child is more likely to embrace a digital detox if they see you limiting your own social media use and engaging in offline activities. Be mindful of your own screen time habits.
- Participate Together: Consider doing a family digital detox challenge where everyone reduces their screen time together. This creates a supportive environment.
5. Support and Encouragement:
- Monitor Progress and Check-In: Regularly talk to your child about how they are feeling during the detox. Acknowledge their efforts and any challenges they are facing.
- Offer Encouragement and Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and praise their progress in reducing social media use and engaging in other activities.
- Be Patient and Understanding: There might be setbacks. Approach them with understanding and work together to get back on track.
- Emphasize the Benefits: Remind your child of the positive outcomes they might experience, such as improved sleep, better focus, reduced anxiety, and stronger relationships.
6. Seek Professional Help if Needed:
- If your child's social media use has significantly impacted their mental health, well-being, or daily functioning, consider seeking guidance from a therapist or counselor who specializes in technology use and adolescent development.
Remember, the goal is not necessarily to eliminate social media entirely, but to help your child develop a healthier and more balanced relationship with it. This takes time, patience, and a collaborative effort between you and your child.
