Good evening Team Ochoa,

Last week the counselors and admin team started scheduling and hosting 504 Plan Meetings and Student Success Team Meetings, based on staff feedback during our Focal Student Meetings. There are quite a few scheduled for this week and next and we will do our best to get you in and out quickly. When possible, please make yourselves available to attend or provide feedback, your observations of students during instructional times is invaluable to their success.

Friday, Ms. Hiester, Ms. Garcia, Ms. Zendejas, Mr. Loza, and Ms. Mejia helped support our Fun Friday Event for Hispanic Heritage Month. Students participated in flower making in preparation for Dia De Los Muertos. Also, students learned to play dominoes. Both activities are heavily steeped in Hispanic Heritage and traditions. Thank you to all who made these lunchtime events possible. In the MPR, Mr. TaƱada, Ms. Haynes and our Leadership students were taking photos in the photo booth for Hispanic Heritage Month. I can't wait to see the amazing pictures!

As you know October 1st marked the start of Filipino American Heritage Month. Please do find a way to incorporate these affinity month celebrations into your lessons. Students really enjoy it when their culture and traditions are acknowledged and celebrated. I have linked a few instructional resources below for both Hispanic Heritage Month and Filipino American History Month.

Finally, I'd like to shout out classes visited last week, Ms. Kean, Mr. Kirsch, Mr. Holbrook and Ms. Carpenter for their use of academic language in classes.. There are lots of good things happening to engage our students each day. Ms. Pisa and I look forward to visiting more classes this week.

Supervision Schedule Supervision Schedule

As a reminder the supervision schedule supports a safe school climate. If you are present in the mornings we can use your support mostly in the blacktop, cafeteria and front quad areas. Please continue to stand outside of your doors during passing periods and after school to ensure students are moving appropriately and timely through the hallways.

*As a reminder, add your supervision schedule to any sub plans in your absence as appropriate.

Focus: Promoting Literacy Focused Strategies Across Disciplines

"Literacy is not an ELA activity it is how students access, process, communicate, and demonstrate disciplinary knowledge.ā€ The goal is not to make every class look like English class. The goal is to make the literacy practices of each discipline visible and intentional.

Here are a few strategies for a Literacy-Rich Classrooms Across All Disciplines:

1. Read something every day- Read a problem, procedure, primary source, diagram, score, chart, recipe, article, directions, data set, lyrics, or technical text.

2. Make thinking visible through writing- Explain, justify, summarize, reflect, compare, annotate, predict, calculate-and-explain, or defend a position.

3. Build academic vocabulary- Explicitly teach discipline-specific words, phrases, symbols, and language structures, and word parts (prefix/root/suffix) and make connections to similar words.

4. Use structured student talk- Think-Pair-Share, turn-and-talk, partner rehearsal, academic conversations, critique, discussion/socratic seminar, debate, and collaborative problem solving.

5. Require students to explain their thinking- Move beyond ā€œWhat is the answer?ā€ to ā€œHow do you know?ā€ ā€œWhy?ā€ ā€œWhat evidence supports that?ā€

6. Use writing to learn, not just writing to assess- Quick writes, exit tickets, reflections, predictions, annotations, journals, explanations, meta-cognition and learning logs.

What is SBDM: Site Based Decision Making (SBDM) was introduced to Hayward USD in 1996 as a strategy for ensuring that staff, parents, and students at individual school sites had a vehicle for engaging in the decision-making that most affected their own sites. Over the years, HUSD board and district leadership have affirmed the importance of SBDM as a means of exchanging ideas, data, and other information necessary to improving educational opportunities for HUSD students. Members are elected by their peers and serve a 2-year term and can nominate themselves for reelection.

School Site Council School Site Council

What is SSC & What do we do?

Congratulations to Ms. Jamila Harris, she will be our new SSC Parent Representative! A School Site Council (SSC) must be established at all Hayward Unified School District public schools. The elected members represent parents, students, community members, and school staff in school governance. The SSC is responsible for the development of the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA), and overall school site budget including any categorical funds. The SSC is expected to:

Assist the principal in developing the SPSA and school site allocated Title I funds:
Review and analyze student data.
Solicit stakeholder (students, parents, staff) input and develop a needs assessment.
Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of the SPSA on an ongoing basis.
Approve the SPSA and school site budget before it is submitted to the District for final review and approval.
The school council and committees are needed to support all school programs. You are invited to become a candidate for membership on the council and/or any or all of the committees of your choice. The school & district are responsible for providing you with the information and training you need to be an effective member. Generally, the groups meet once every other month for two hours. Family members often offer insights on how effective our school is in creating a positive learning environment for students and monitor how resources are supporting student academic achievement. Perspectives and parent participation/involvement are important to our school.
