Joyce Davis Presents to 8th Graders About the Holocaust

Our Coolidge 8th graders had the special opportunity to hear a presentation by Joyce Davis regarding her family's experience fleeing the Holocaust. Her mother, Elizabeth Zinger Davis, and Aunt Fritzi were two of 50 children rescued from Nazi-controlled Vienna by Philadelphians Mr. and Mrs. Kraus. The story of this rescue became a documentary: "50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus".

Opportunities such as these are so important for our students as they build their understanding of intolerance, patterns in history, stepping up to make a difference, and the importance of acceptance. It is also important to learn that events such as the Holocaust are not ones to forget or to disengage from as something in the past. To hear from a family that was impacted in such a way is one such opportunity. We invite you to ask your students about this presentation, as well as the threads that this theme will also have in English, through reading the book "Refugee".

Special thanks to ELA teacher Erica LeBow for organizing this opportunity, and to the Coolidge PTO for funding it!

2-D Art Classes Visits the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston

Thanks to the organization of art teacher Sarah Doane, the two 2-D art classes visited the Instutute of Contemporary Art this past Tuesday. Students had time to tour the museum, see the special exhibit "Love is Calling" by Yayoi Kusama, and develop some personal art in the museum's Art Lab.

RMHS Performing Arts Presentation: January 23

All current eighth graders and their parents are invited to this event on Jan. 23rd at 7:00 PM in the RMHS performing arts center (auditorium). Department chair Anna Wentlent will kick present an an overview of our programming, and then students will hear from teachers from music, art, and drama regarding their classes. Ms. Wentlent will also show several example schedules, so that the eighth graders can start to make decisions about what classes and extracurricular activities they'd like to participate in as freshman. High school students from each discipline will also be there to answer student questions.
