Updates from Principal Bican
Dear Meadowview Families,
In recent weeks, our community and communities across the state of MN have been facing some very challenging and emotional times. We recognize that many families are experiencing fear, uncertainty, and stress. We also understand that some families do not feel comfortable sending their children to school right now.
Please know that we care deeply about the safety and well-being of our students and families. We will do our very best to support our families through these challenging times. There are protocols in place to protect students and staff and prioritize safety above all else. We are also committed to maintaining a warm and caring learning environment where all students feel valued, important, and loved here at school.
If you’ve chosen to keep your child home for safety concerns, please make sure to submit the length of your child’s absence using our online attendance form linked here. Weekly attendance communication using the online link or by called 651-460-3105 will be required so we know your family’s plan. We do not have an online school or full distance-learning program for instruction in Farmington. However, flexible learning options prioritizing reading and math skills will be provided to support our families with safety concerns. Please connect with your child’s classroom teacher to learn more about these options. (This option is not for vacations or convenience—it is specifically intended to support safety.)
We remain fully committed to keeping Meadowview a safe, welcoming place for every child. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Wit and Wisdom Update
Focus on Writing
Wit & Wisdom is an English Language Arts Curriculum, which means that it focuses on reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
The Wit & Wisdom curriculum includes a lot of writing because it is built on the idea that reading and writing grow best when they are taught together. When children read interesting, meaningful texts and then write about what they’ve learned, their understanding becomes deeper and more lasting.
Rather than practicing writing in isolation, students are given something real to write about. They build knowledge and vocabulary through reading first, which helps them feel more confident and capable when it’s time to write.
How This Helps Students Learn
Building Knowledge and Vocabulary
Students read rich, engaging texts around a shared topic. Writing assignments ask them to use what they’ve learned from those readings, helping them remember new ideas and words while strengthening comprehension.Reading and Writing Work Together
Writing is part of the reading lesson, not a separate activity. Students write in response to what they read, which helps teachers see what students understand and helps students process their learning more deeply.Preparing Students for the Future
The amount of writing helps students meet higher academic expectations and prepares them for future grades. Teachers often see students produce thoughtful, well-organized writing—sometimes more than expected—because they’ve been guided step by step.Thinking Before Writing
Students talk about ideas, ask questions, and take notes before they write. Graphic organizers help them gather their thoughts so the final writing feels manageable and purposeful rather than overwhelming.
Overall, the writing in Wit & Wisdom is designed to support learning, build confidence, and help students express what they truly understand. Here are some pictures of 3rd grade students writing work.

Important School Information
Recess & Outdoor Breaks
Please be sure to send cold weather gear with students each day! Students will go outside for recess and/or break if temperature is above 0 degrees (actual temperature or wind chill temperature). Often temperature fluctuates throughout the day, so while we may not go out for recess, classrooms may go out for afternoon break.

Attendance Tip!
Getting to school on time is just as important as being at school. Research shows that continued tardiness leads to poor attendance. Many of the most important parts of a student's day happen within the first 15 minutes. This is often when they have a time to socialize with their peers, orient themselves for the day, take care of necessary business, and connect with their teacher before the day starts. Never underestimate the power of the first 15 minutes of school!
End of Day Routine
Please make sure your child's teacher has an accurate, up-to-date plan for your child's dismissal at the end of the day.
When changes are needed, please communicate those changes with your child's teacher prior to the start of the school day. We cannot always guarantee teachers will see emails during the work day (as it depends on the activities they have planned with the students).
For EMERGENCY CHANGES, please communicate with the teacher and call the front office no later than 2pm. Changes to end of day routines are difficult for students and teachers. If at all possible please change YOUR routine instead of your students routine.
