CTE Teacher Preparation Program
CTE Teacher Prep News and Updates for January 2026

A MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR
Dear CTE Educators and Partners,
As we begin the new semester, I want to welcome back all of our CTE educators, mentors, and partners. I hope you were able to find time to slow down, reflect, and enjoy the people and traditions that matter most to you.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend Mark C. Perna’s Unleashing Passion and Purpose in Today’s Young People, hosted by the Butte County Office of Education and Glenn County Office of Education. Mark shared his 21 Skills for a Personal Competitive Advantage, many of which align closely with what we aim to develop through CTE programs, including consistency, communication, empathy, problem-solving, adaptability, and leadership. What resonated most with me was the reminder that these are not “student-only” skills. They call on us to model professionalism, adaptability, and lifelong learning, while intentionally creating environments where students can grow both academically and personally.
As CTE educators, we are uniquely positioned to model these competencies in real and visible ways through how we navigate challenges, build relationships, collaborate with industry and community partners, and respond when things do not go as planned. By being open about our own growth, showing vulnerability, and embracing continuous improvement, we help students see that learning does not ever stop, but continues through reflection, adjustment, and persistence. As we move into the semester, I invite you to consider how we can intentionally develop these skills in ourselves and in our students, together preparing them not just for a career, but for a meaningful and connected life in our community. This is how we continue Shaping Tomorrow, Together.
Cheers,
Jillian

The California Youth Apprenticeship Model, 2024
The division of apprenticeship standards put out a new guide that includes pre apprenticeship and lists WEE as the program to use as a bridge between teens still in high school and the full apprenticeship. The California Youth Apprenticeship Committee (CYAC) was convened as called for by SB 191 to develop recommendations for the Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS) on how to implement youth apprenticeships for in-school and out-of-school youth in California.
