Reading Together
Reading 20 Minutes Every Day and Playing With a Purpose are essential activities to do with your child to help them get READY! for Kindergarten.
Learning Through Play
Crunchy Box
Freeze colored water in an ice cube tray. Toddlers can hold the ice cubes and “paint” on paper as the ice melts.
What skills will children learn from this activity?
Cognitive: Color recognition and cause and effect, (it gets warm and the ice melts, the colors change when they mix).
Sensory Exploration: Young children will experience temperature changes (cold ice) and textures (wet, slippery surface).
How can I make this activity more accessible?:
- For children with sensory sensitivities, wrap the ice in a cloth or use popsicle sticks as handles.
- Use larger ice cubes or popsicle molds with larger handles for children still developing fine motor skills.
- Incorporate words for this activity on an AAC device to encourage language (e.g., “blue,” “cold,” “paint”).
