Weymouth Early Childhood Center
2025-2026
September 28, 2025
Good Morning,
The Weymouth Fire Department visited us on Tuesday morning to practice a fire drill. The students did an amazing job evacuating quickly and calmly from the building. We will continue to practice these drills so that all students have a chance to participate.
This week, our students focused on important social and behavioral skills to create a positive and respectful classroom environment. They learned how to greet their peers warmly, practiced our classroom listening rules, and reviewed the school-wide PBS (Positive Behavior Support) expectations.
A highlight of the week was reading My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook. This engaging story uses the metaphor of a volcano to help children understand how to manage their thoughts and avoid interrupting others. The book follows Louis, a young boy who struggles to control his words, which seem to erupt uncontrollably like a volcano. Through Louis’s experiences—especially after feeling the frustration of being interrupted himself—students learn valuable strategies to control their impulses and patiently wait their turn to speak.
This story reinforces respect for others by emphasizing the importance of listening carefully and giving everyone a chance to be heard. We are proud to see our students practicing these skills and building a foundation for effective communication and mutual respect.
Why PBS?
We teach PBS expectations (Positive Behavior Support) and classroom rules to our preK students for several important reasons:
Creates a Safe Environment: Rules help keep everyone safe, so students know what behaviors are expected to prevent accidents or conflicts.
Promotes Social Skills: Learning expectations teaches students how to interact respectfully with teachers and peers, like sharing, listening, and taking turns.
Builds Routine and Structure: Consistent rules and expectations give students a sense of predictability and security, helping them feel more comfortable and confident in the classroom.
Encourages Positive Behavior: PBS focuses on reinforcing good behaviors and helps students learn what’s acceptable and motivating for them to behave well.
Prepares for Future Learning: Understanding and following rules early sets a foundation for future school success, where more complex social and academic expectations exist.
In short, teaching PBS expectations and classroom rules helps preschoolers learn how to be part of a community, behave positively, and thrive in their early learning environment.
Have a great Sunday!

Safety
The first weeks of school are critical for establishing daily schedules, routines, and—most importantly—safety protocols. During this time, staff have been actively teaching students about our fire drill procedures and other key safety practices.
As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and emotional well-being, we incorporate two important books into our monthly safety lessons: The Ant Hill Disaster and The Elephant in the Room.
Here’s a brief synopsis of each:
-
The Ant Hill Disaster by Julia Cook
This story follows a young ant who is scared to return to school after it is destroyed in a disaster. Through the narrative, students learn how to cope with fear, develop resilience, and feel safe returning to school after a traumatic event. -
The Elephant in the Room
This book helps children process and talk about difficult or confusing feelings that may arise from challenging situations, emphasizing the importance of communication, empathy, and support within the school community.
By reading and discussing these books regularly, we aim to create a safe and supportive environment where students and staff are prepared.
Upcoming Family Engagement Opportunities
We’re excited to share a variety of upcoming events for families to attend or maybe enjoy together! This list will be updated throughout the school year as new opportunities become available. We hope you'll be able to attend many of the events!

About this Series
The Backpack Connection Series was created by TACSEI to provide a way for teachers and parents/caregivers to work together to help young children develop social emotional skills and reduce challenging behavior.
Each Backpack Connection handout provides information that helps parents stay informed about what their child is learning at school and specific ideas on how to use the strategy or skill at home.
