Term 3 Week 4 - Thursday 14 August 2025
PRAYER
Empowering God,
Inspire us by the example of Mary’s openness to your Love.
May we live in this attitude and bring to birth a new world!
We make our prayer through Jesus Christ in the unity of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
Calendar of Events
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
Tomorrow, we affirm our belief that Mary is now in Heaven. This feast of Mary originated in a sixth century feast of the Dormition or ‘Falling asleep of Mary’. By the seventh century the feast became known as the Assumption of Mary.
The date of this feast commemorated a very ancient harvest festival towards the end of summer, which gave thanks to the Earth Mother for her fertility in producing the harvest. The feast of the Assumption commemorates the glorification of Mary, chosen by God, to be the mother of Jesus the Christ.
The feast acquired a special status as a feast of Mary when Pius XII in 1950 defined the assumption as a dogma of faith. On this feast we are encouraged to affirm our humanity and work to enhance the dignity of people as daughters and sons of God.
We will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption at 9.00am tomorrow (Friday) in the church. Our community is invited to attend Mass and celebrate with us.
RECONCILIATION WORKSHOP
The Parish will be conducting a Penance Workshop for students in Year 3 who will be making their first Rite of Reconciliation in Week 9. This is on Wednesday 20 August at 5.30pm in the Parish Hall. One parent is expected to attend with their child. Please let the Parish know if you are unable to make it.
KIDS FOR KIDS PYJAMA DAY
A favourite day on our school calendar is happening on Tuesday 19th August. The Social Justice Committee will be raising money for the Flame of Love Orphanage in the Congo through our Pyjama Day. On this day, students are allowed to wear their pyjamas to school. Please be mindful of enclosed footwear and any PE lessons that the students may have on the day. Children are asked to bring in a gold coin donation on the day. Enjoy the day free of uniforms!
PLAYING AFTER SCHOOL
Unfortunately, I’m going to be a killjoy for the second week in a row.
We have some concerns about children playing on ’the green’ at the end of the day. Teachers on the carpark and church duty have some students not arriving at the pickups until 3.15pm or later. This raises a concern, there may not be a teacher on duty at the pickup points if students come too late. Our OSH ladies are having to go and find children who have been booked into OSH. Parents have complained to teachers about rough play happening while students are running/playing unsupervised after school. The common factor? Students playing on the green after school.
As this is a child safety concern, we now need to have rules in place for students as they leave the school. Children have been asked not to play on the green after school and to make their way immediately to where they need to be. Today, I spoke to the children in Years 3-6 about why we need to make this rule. I do hope parents understand our concerns for the safety of our Queenies children and support us in making the school a safe place for all.
REMINDER
We have an extra long weekend scheduled next weekend. On Friday August 22, the staff will be using the day to follow up on their professional requirements. On Monday 25 August, we have our Catholic Day which recognises the extra commitments that staff in Catholic schools make towards the preparation and celebration of the faith journey of students at Queen of Apostles. Both days are Pupil Free Days.
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend.

MUSIC NEWS
Catholic Performing Arts Festival
The Catholic Performing Arts Festival commences this term, and I would like to wish our entries all the best as they participate in this wonderful festival. I have included a schedule outlining dates for students who have entered.
Please remember, it is the parent’s responsibility to transport their child to their Instrumental or Vocal Performance. Students are required to be there at least 15 minutes before their session.
Each student is to prepare a brief introduction before their item including their name, school name and name of their piece of music. Please encourage your child to practice this beforehand.
Students are to wear their academic winter school uniform for their performance. School jumpers are preferred as opposed to their winter jackets. Please ensure that if your child requires a backing track, that you have your own mobile device and speaker ready to play, preferably Bluetooth or wireless. No CDs please.
All parents / guardians must purchase a ticket to attend the performance. Please note, tickets will not be sold at the door. Tickets for the 36th Performing Arts Festival are available to purchase from FRIDAY 4TH JULY. All ticketing links can be found via the Spirit of the Arts website https://www.spiritofthearts.com.au/performing-arts-festival/, under each festival section.
Kind regards

Canteen Volunteers
Our canteen manager, Sharon is in need of assistance on Thursday and Friday mornings. If you can spare an hour or two on either of these days, please see Sharon. A reminder that the Volunteers Form will need to be filled out if it hasn’t already been submitted this year. Due to Child Safety regulations, only parents can volunteer in the canteen – friends or grandparents require a Working With Children Card.
Parking and Drive Thru Arrangements
A reminder for everyone to be aware of our parking and drive through arrangements at the front of the school as the safety of our children is of paramount importance.
- Vehicles will enter via the middle driveway on Tribute St East.
- If you wish to park and leave your car to come into the school, please turn to the left and park in one of the bays adjacent to the Early Learning Centre or use the marked roadside bays outside the school.
- When exiting the car park, you will do so at the exit closest to Vahland Ave.
- If you are only dropping-off or picking-up, then please veer right and enter the drive-thru area. In this area you may not park or leave your vehicle unattended - it is strictly drop-off or pick- up only!
- When exiting the drive-thru section you will use the exit closest to Tudor Ave.
- Children waiting to be picked up are to wait on the verandah, under teacher supervision, and when they see their parent’s car enter the drive-thru, they may proceed down the steps at either end of the ramp and wait on the footpath adjacent to the bay where their parent has pulled up.
- Children should enter vehicles from the curbside only to avoid passing vehicles.
Volunteering
The Government of WA have amended the Working with Children Act last year with the changes implemented to better protect children. Catholic Education WA has mandated this process for all volunteers, including parent volunteers in schools. This includes parents who wish to volunteer at sports carnivals, in classrooms and at P&F events. Could we ask that all parents fill in the Volunteer Declaration (link) even if you have no plans at this stage to volunteer at school. If you filled out the form last year you will need to do it again this year. Parents who wish to assist teachers on excursions will need to be on this list. Your information will be stored securely in accordance with CEWA’s Information Stewardship. We highly value parent volunteers' time and contribution to our school community and thank-you for taking the time to submit the form below.
Any grandparents that wish to volunteer in the classroom or assist in the canteen will need a Working With Children Check. Please note this does not include drop off, pick up or attendance at our Grandparents Mass and Morning Tea. Grandparents that would like to volunteer at school, please contact the school office and we can assist you in the process.

Dental health - Keep your child's teeth healthy
Teeth help children to eat, speak and smile. Regularly brushing teeth can prevent bad breath, tooth decay, and gum diseases.
Parents and guardians can help children to keep their teeth clean. Some tips are:
• Children below 6 years can use small smear (small pea sized) amount of low fluoride children’s toothpaste
• Children 6 years and older can use pea-sized amounts of standard fluoride toothpaste
• Encourage children to brush their teeth morning and night, and supervise tooth brushing until they are 8 or 9 years old
• Use an age-appropriate toothpaste and toothbrush
• Educate children about healthy eating habits and limit sugary foods and drinks
• Encourage them to choose water as their preferred drink
For more details, see 5-8 years, 9-11 years, and 12-18 years by Raising Children Network or School Dental Service, Government of Western Australia.
The School Dental Service offers free general and emergency dental care to eligible children aged 5-16 or until the end of year 11 (whichever comes first). Find your nearest School Dental Service Clinic or contact Dental Services on 9313 0555 for further information.
Raising Children Network
Children are as individual and as different as their parents and making decisions about what’s best for raising children is very personal.
The Raising Children website offers up-to-date, research-based material on more than 800 topics spanning child development, behaviour, health, nutrition and fitness, play and learning, connecting and communicating, school and education, entertainment and technology, sleep and safety.
It covers grown-ups, newborns (0-3 months), babies (3-12 months), toddlers (1-3 years), preschoolers (3-5 years), school-age children (5-9 years), pre-teens (9-11 years), and early teens (12-15 years).
There are tips, videos and other useful resources.
The Raising Children Network provides information that can help parents with the day-to-day decisions of raising children. It also provides information to help parents and carers look after their own needs. The information is based on the best science in parenting, child health and development, presented in language we can all understand.
