The Wednesday Weekly
Back to School Updates - 8/28/24
Message from Ms. Joanna
Dear PS 107 Families,
We are eagerly gearing up for the start of the 2024-25 school year here at PS 107, and the building is positively humming with activity! Over the last several days, teachers have been coming in to start setting up their classrooms; class assignments have gone out; and many of our teachers have shared their welcome letters with all of you. Today, several middle and high school volunteers were in the building to help us sort through all of the curricular materials that were delivered over the summer for our classrooms. We are all so excited to welcome your children back to school on Thursday, September 5th!
As you all know, students need school supplies, and all of our teachers are either collecting funds so that they can purchase supplies in bulk – or have sent home supply lists. Please know that if this is a financial hardship for any of our families, we are here to help! Just send a brief email to Parent Coordinator Nadia Benlarbi at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov letting us know that your family needs assistance with funds for school supplies, and your child’s supplies will be taken care of, no questions asked.
Keep an eye out on Wednesdays for future issues of The Wednesday Weekly! They will be jam packed with information about what’s happening here at school. Enjoy the waning days of summer, and we can’t wait to see you all on the first day of school!
Warmly,
Ms Joanna

SCHOOL INFORMATION
2024-2025 CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
Class assignments were sent out via Operoo yesterday, August 27th. We go through a very lengthy process to create new classes from year to year, the primary goal of which is to build diverse and balanced classes. We have put a great deal of thought and care into creating classes and have used our professional judgment to ensure that classes are the best possible fit for all students at PS 107. Please note that we do not honor requests for class changes.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR 2024-2025
You may have already received a welcome letter from your child’s teacher(s), if not, one should be on it's way very soon. That letter will include either a list of school supplies to purchase or details about how to submit a payment for your child’s school supplies. If you need financial assistance with school supplies, please do not hesitate to reach out to Parent Coordinator Nadia Benlarbi at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov.
SCHOOL HOURS FOR 2024-2025
The first day of school is Thursday, September 5th. This is a full day of school for all grades. The school day will run from 8:20 am to 2:35 pm. Student arrival and dismissal locations will be sent to you along with class assignments the last week of August. For the complete 2024-2025 school year calendar, please click here.
EARLY BIRD FOR 2024-2025
Over the summer, we held a lottery for our Early Bird Program. We are now at capacity and cannot accommodate additional students and maintain the safety needed for supervision. If you are interested in participating in the program, please email Nadia Benlarbi at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov to add your name to our Early Bird Waitlist and we will notify you of any openings.
SCHOOL BREAKFAST FOR 2024-2025
PS 107 will no longer be offering bagged breakfast for students to eat in their classrooms daily. We will continue to offer free breakfast, but in order to take advantage of it, students must come to school between 8 and 8:10 am for breakfast. They will be supervised in the cafeteria by PS 107 staff members. There is no sign up required to have school breakfast. Students just need to come through the main entrance with a caregiver and let Agent Sharon know they are there for breakfast. Students will be dismissed to their classrooms at 8:20 am. Students will not be admitted for breakfast in the cafeteria after 8:10 am daily. Note that children will not be denied breakfast if they arrive late! Any child who arrives after 8:20 am (the start of the school day) and needs breakfast can pick up a bagged "breakfast after the bell."
SCHOOL LUNCH FOR 2024-2025
School lunch will continue to be offered to all students for free daily. Most likely, PS 107 will use the PreK-8 Express Hot Lunch menu. The best way to keep track of what is being served is on the School Food app, the link to download the app can be found on this page. Note that food substitutions may occur based on supply chain issues, and we do not recommend relying on school food if your child is not a flexible eater. 😀
2024-2025 ANNUAL FORMS
The following forms are currently available for completion via Operoo:
Emergency Blue Card
Daily Dismissal form
Media Consent form (for new-to-NYC Public Schools students only)
Prospect Park and Neighborhood Walking Trip permission slip
Park Slope Armory YMCA consent form
Please be sure to complete these forms as soon as possible so that we can have this information available for staff at the beginning of the school year.
AFTERSCHOOL FOR 2024-2025
PS 107 offers a wonderful in-house afterschool program run by the Park Slope Afterschool Center Corporation, an independent, non-profit organization. Afterschool classes take place every day from 2:35 to 5:55 pm. PSACC held a virtual Open House on Thursday August 8th, where they provided information about how the program operates and their many offerings. Check their website for a recording of this session. If you have immediate questions about afterschool, please reach out to Pamela Rosenberg, PSACC Director at director@psafterschool.org.
JOIN KONSTELLA!
A great deal of schoolwide parent communication at PS 107 is sent out via the Konstella platform. If you are not already signed up for Konstella, please follow the directions here.
When you have your child’s classroom assignment, you will follow the instructions to add yourself to the classroom here in our Konstella Cheat Sheet.
If you have difficulty or have any questions, please reach out to the Communications Team at communications@ps107.org or Nadia Benlarbi, PS 107’s Parent Coordinator at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov.
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION INFORMATION
FAMILY INCOME FORMS
All families should complete the Family Income Inquiry Form, which helps schools receive money for their programs ,whether or not they qualify for free or reduced lunch.
NYC SCHOOLS ACCOUNT - NYCSA
This is a NYC DOE parent account for students grades K - 12 that enables parents/guardians to view all of their children’s records - grades, fitnessgrams, attendance, your child’s DOE email, etc. At least one parent/guardian will need to have access to this account. We strongly encourage all parents/guardians to have their own account. Any parent with children in grades 1-5 who does not have their own NYSCA , please contact nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov for instructions and your unique account creation code.
PLEASE NOTE: Incoming PreK ,Kindergarten, and new to NYC Public School families will need to wait until the 2nd week of school when their child’s Student ID (aka OSIS number) will be generated. Once your child has been given their ID number, I will share directions along with unique account creation codes with you to set up your child’s NYSCA.
SAVE THE DATE
The PTA will host their annual PreK and Kindergarten Welcome Picnic on Monday, September 2nd (Labor Day!), 10 am-12 pm, just south of Harmony Playground and the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park). HELPFUL TIPS
MAKING SCHOOL DAY DISMISSAL PICK-UP CHANGES
If there is a change to your child’s dismissal, please be sure to note the change on the Daily Dismissal form in Operoo. If it is a same day change, please email your child’s teacher and cc Nadia at nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov in addition to any changes on the Daily Dismissal form. You can also contact the main office at 718-499-2054.
LABEL!
Please parents, remember to label your student’s water bottles, lunch boxes, backpacks, and clothing with their full name (last names are essential!) and if there is space, please include their class number. We want to be able to return all fabulous items to their rightful owner!
LOWER GRADES
Please be sure to send your children to school with a full change of clothes. Accidents can happen easily when they are younger as they often get distracted and don’t check in with their bodies. Please be sure to return your child with a new set the next day if they need to be replaced.
IDENTIFICATION
When entering the school building you must present your ID to the safety agent when signing in.
One helpful tip is to take a picture of your id. Often, we will have our phone with us even if we don’t have our id. This way, you always have it handy :)
