FREE community event- Marine Science Day

The students and faculty at San Diego State University's Marine Ecology and Biology Student Association (MEBSA) are excited to invite you to our FREE community event- Marine Science Day at the Coastal and Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL), on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 11am-3pm.

MEBSA is a student-run organization that strives to raise awareness about current research and conservation issues in marine science. This exciting opportunity to explore our marine lab, learn about current research at SDSU, and engage with local marine scientists only comes around once a year and we are incredibly excited to welcome back members of our community for our first public event since the pandemic shutdowns.

Come learn about some of our favorite Saltwater Superheroes through interactive games, lab tours, activities, SCUBA demos, and seminars by local scientists! Marine Science Day is FREE, kid-friendly, and geared toward all members of the public.

Check out our website for more info: https://mebsa.wordpress.com/marine-science-day-2023/

  • Where: Online! Students can log in and schools can register here.

Teachers can simply sign up their school to get a unique school code, then tell their students about ITZA, and send them off to discover! (Teachers should remember to share the school code with their students from April 19 so they can sign up to the school team).

National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Professional Learning Units

NSTA offers short, self-paced, online courses that educators may utilize to enhance their profession, deepen students' learning, and encourage equitable participation in the classroom. Complete each course to earn an NSTA professional learning unit certificate, which can be applied towards credit hours of professional learning, anytime it is convenient for you, regardless of your schedule or location. Some NSTA professional learning units are free for NSTA members and some are free for all educators. Check out What is Sensemaking? for free.

Calling ALL Secondary Science Teachers

Counseling and Guidance through the SDUSD TUPE Office is looking for some science teachers who are interested in writing a unit that addresses the dangers of vaping and smoking tobacco, nicotine and cannabis products. The units should align with current NGSS and would be able to be added to the GVCs for Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Beyond the writing of the curriculum, we are looking at ideas on how to roll out the curriculum (in-person trainings). The non-classroom hourly rate would be used and the amount of hours would be agreed upon prior to the curriculum writing. All interested, please reach out to Patrick Chen @ pchen@sandi.net
