Happy Fall Y'All!!!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

October was one busy month here at Wharton. We had so many wonderful events. Our spirit week was a big hit. The pumpkin painting family event was well attended. All of the homerooms did a fine job decorating their doors. On October 31st we had a fall celebration. Students were able to choose a movie and create their own popcorn treat with lots of yummy toppings!

November is a month that once you blink it is over. Our school recognizes American Indian Heritage and Family Literacy month, National STEAM/STEM Day, Election Day, Veterans Day, Parent-Teacher Conferences and Thanksgiving. November is a great month to practice gratitude and reflect on traditions.

From Our Social Worker : Meredith Schilsky

We have had a busy few weeks here at Wharton 5th Grade Center! October is National Anti-bullying month and students have been learning about the different people involved in a bully interaction and the different types of bullying over the last few weeks. We did a science experiment while reading the book One by Kathryn Otoshi using food coloring to demonstrate how quickly an environment can be impacted by a bully and how it can be transformed once again by an upstander (the word we use for the person who stands up to the bully). All our classrooms competed in an anti-bullying door decorating contest and students had an entire week of dress down days centered around ending bully behaviors. We will continue to talk about how bullying impacts our personal lives, the climate of our school and our world over the next few weeks. For resources on how you can continue this conversation at home, please visit the Stop Bullying site.

Stop Bullying Home Page

Stop Bullying on the Spot When adults respond quickly and consistently to bullying behavior they send the message that it is not acceptable. Research shows this can stop bullying behavior over time. Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying by talking about it, building a safe school environment, and creating a community-wide bullying prevention strategy.

Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday October 15th teachers Ms. Frick, Ms. Cardenas, and Ms. Kirscher participated in an event organized by PMC CREW and Help Build Hope to build the walls of a house that will benefit Habitat for Humanity. Along with 60 other volunteers the teachers spent 4 hours in the cold weather building the 44 wall sections of the house in the parking lot of Peace Memorial Church in Palos Park. The wall sections were then loaded on a truck and taken to the Fox Valley area where they will be assembled into a home for a family in need with the help of Habitat for Humanity.

Day of the Dead

Wharton School participated in the Day of the Dead. In Spanish it is known as Dia de los Muertos. This holiday is traditionally celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. It is a major part of the Mexican heritage.

Our dual teachers Mr. Vazquez, Mrs. Reyes, and Mrs. Noffsinger did a fine job creating a school altar. This display is located in the school lobby. It includes traditional dishes and photos of love ones who have passed. The students created their own personal altars as a class project. What an amazing job!

Dress For the Weather

With colder weather upon us, we want to be sure that your child comes dressed for the weather and ready to play outside. We will be going outside for recess each day. Students will be going outside as long as it is 20 degrees (this includes the real feel) and above. Check the weather daily and dress accordingly.
