Nichols News
An Eighth Grade Exchange Edition #7
Hello 8th Grade Parents!
I wanted to update you on a few important matters for the upcoming week:
- Picture Retake Day: If your child was not at Nichols on picture day, this will be their last opportunity to take a picture to be in our 2024-2025 yearbook. Retakes will happen between 8 - 10:30 am this coming Wednesday. Please make sure to note this time as you are planning appointments and any other activities.
- Fine Arts Rotation: This is the final week of the current Fine Arts rotation. As a reminder, students rotate through different Fine Arts classes every 9 weeks, including Drama, Media Arts, Music, and Visual Arts. Please encourage your child to complete all outstanding work for their current Fine Arts class, as they will be transitioning to a new Fine Arts subject next week.
- Tissue Box Donations: We kindly request your help in donating tissue boxes to your child's classroom. We made this request last week but received fewer donations than needed. As the weather changes, students require tissues more frequently, so your contributions would be greatly appreciated.
- Tardies: Tardies are becoming a significant issue for our 8th Grade Scholars! Please assist us in having conversation with your student around the importance of being to class on time. Along with that, just a reminder of the Nichols Tardy Policy which states students will have Time Back for 12+ tardies.
- Cold Weather FYI: Please not that we do have outdoor recess unless there is rain or hazardous conditions. Please send students to school with appropriate clothing to be outside for recess as we get deeper into Fall.
- D65 Sexual Health Instruction: We have upcoming comprehensive sexual health instruction for family education nights. See the (Flyers: English & Spanish) for additional information! Grades 6th-8th will be Thursday, October 24th (6-7pm) on Zoom
Thank you for your continued support and cooperation. If you have any questions or wonderings, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Best,
Ms. Ernvall

🏆 Congratulations Nichols Cross-Country Team! 🎽
Coach Perez said, "The Nichols Cross Country Team had a great season as they learned to face their fears and put themselves out there each and every race. The motto "you versus you" played out well for the team as they progressed through the short season, every runner on the team ended up being a more well rounded person and athlete as the season came to a halt. Student-athletes had a lot of life lessons being worked through this year as we learned to compete and stay on our own personal game, luckily the team had the support of one another to lean on and help them through this journey."
Congratulations to three students who qualified for state cross country:
Dylan Wooller (8th Grade)
Dalston Wooller (8th Grade)
Penelope "Nelley" Patton (6th Grade)
A Special THANK YOU to our coaches: Mr. Perez, Ms. Olvera, and Ms. Papageorgiou!

Black SonRISE Week 1 Recap
Greetings Fellow Parents and Caregivers,
We had a strong start to the fall session today! Following our introductions we discussed the urgency of the moment that we are facing as a country. Our community needs each of the Risers to step up as leaders, and we need them to prepare now.
Preparation begins with awareness. We discussed issues at stake in the upcoming election, and how they impact our lives in Evanston.
Another component of leadership involves belief in one's self. We introduced the Black SonRISE creed, which is as follows:
I am a leader,
I am smart,
I am truthful,
I work hard every day towards my goals,
I never give up,
I have self control,
I see the best in others,
I'm not afraid to make mistakes,
Today is going to be a great day.
Any Riser who manages to recite the creed from memory each of the remaining four Saturdays will win a meal at Chic-Fil-a!
No BSR session would be complete without fun, and the Risers engaged in an intense "Boom, Clap, Snatch" tournament, with Riser Makai defeating his older brother Nasir in the final for the cash prize.
Attached are pictures from the day.
Thanks again for trusting us with your boys. We look forward to seeing them next Saturday.
