Science Came Alive at WTHS! 🔬🧪 Science Came Alive at WTHS! 🔬🧪

It may have been only the third week of school, but our students are already diving deep into science! Throughout the building, classrooms came alive with hands-on investigations, real-world applications, exciting experiments, and learning in action. From microscopes and measurement to anatomy and flying paper airplanes, our young scientists were asking questions, testing ideas, solving problems, and discovering that science is everywhere. Keep reading to see how WTHS students turned curiosity into discovery this week!

“Accidents HAPpen” When Anatomy Comes Alive! “Accidents HAPpen” When Anatomy Comes Alive!

Science came alive in the building this week as our students jumped into hands-on learning with curiosity, creativity, and plenty of enthusiasm!

In Mr. Trefz’s Anatomy & Physiology classes, students put their knowledge to the test through “Accidents HAPpen,” a creative activity focused on anatomical terminology. Working in groups, students researched accident scenarios and described possible injuries using precise body landmarks and directional terms.

Then came the challenge: groups exchanged their injury lists and used the descriptions to place numbered “bandages” on a volunteer classmate. Could they find the correct locations using anatomical language alone? Students checked their placements against answer keys, discussed differences, and captured their work in a “boo-boo photo.” No actual injuries—just a memorable way to bring science off the page!

Along the way, students practiced research, scientific writing, communication, and collaboration. They also used critical thinking, spatial reasoning, and attention to detail to locate each simulated injury, explain their reasoning, and provide feedback.

The students’ reactions were the best part! They shared that Mr. Trefz makes learning fun and engaging and creates a classroom where they feel comfortable participating and making mistakes. That is how they love to learn! Students reported that they could already identify more than 20 anatomical terms without even realizing they were learning so many “big words.”

A huge shout-out to the J-Squad in Mr. Trefz’s Period 5 class: Jermaine Edmonds, Jadiel Rivera, Juan Carlos Santiago Hernandez, Jameel Koleosho, and Jeremiah Ford! They enthusiastically shared that school has been in session for less than a month, yet they have already learned so much. Their message was clear: when lessons are fun, engaging, and hands-on, they do not even realize how much they are learning.

Thank you, Mr. Trefz, for creating a classroom where students are excited to participate, willing to take risks, and proud of what they are learning!

Measuring Up in Environmental Science! Measuring Up in Environmental Science!

Just down the hall, students in Mr. Knox’s Environmental Science class took a fascinating journey through the history of measurement and the metric system!

Through close reading and annotation, students identified important historical facts and explored how familiar units of measurement came to be. From uncovering the history of the “foot” to discussing questions such as, “How did people agree that 12 inches should equal one foot?” students enthusiastically shared their ideas and made connections between science, history, and everyday life.

Students volunteered responses, listened to different perspectives, and supported their thinking with information from the text. Mr. Knox also used a Popsicle-stick participation system to keep everyone engaged and provide all students with an opportunity to contribute.

Throughout the lesson, students strengthened several essential skills, including close reading, annotation, critical thinking, historical analysis, quantitative reasoning, active listening, communication, and evidence-based discussion. What began as a lesson about measurement became an engaging exploration of how people create systems, establish standards, and use them to better understand the world around us!

Science Through a New Lens! Science Through a New Lens!

The hands-on science continued at WTHS as students in Ms. Smith’s Biology class participated in the classic letter “e” microscope lab!

Students learned how to prepare a slide that clearly displays microscopic details by carefully placing a specimen on a microscope slide and securing it with a coverslip. They then adjusted the microscope’s focus and observed how the letter “e” appeared under different levels of magnification. Students quickly discovered that objects viewed through a compound microscope appear inverted—and that increasing the magnification changes both the field of view and the amount of detail they can see.

Throughout the lab, students strengthened their observation, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and fine-motor skills. They also practiced following laboratory procedures, handling scientific equipment responsibly, recording accurate observations, comparing results, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.

These skills extend far beyond the biology classroom. Microscopes and properly prepared slides are essential tools used by medical professionals to examine cells and diagnose illnesses, forensic scientists to analyze evidence, and environmental scientists to study microorganisms and water quality. By examining one tiny letter, our young scientists gained a much bigger understanding of how microscopes help professionals investigate a world that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Who knew one little “e” could lead to so many exciting discoveries?

Science Takes Flight at WTHS! Science Takes Flight at WTHS!

Ms Mullin's classes worked on a "Best Flying Paper Airplane" Lab this past week to refamiliarize all the students with the scientific method.

Students worked in small groups to come up with different methods for making their paper airplanes fly further down the hall from the original control model provided by Ms Mullin. For two days, students entered the hall and threw airplanes down the runway, measuring the distance to see if their hypotheses were proven or disproven.

The lab definitely got the attention of our security guards who often stopped by to see how the results were going and if students figured out what worked best yet.

History Meets Art: Painting Like Michelangelo 🎨 History Meets Art: Painting Like Michelangelo 🎨

My students had the opportunity to step into the shoes of Michelangelo as we started our Renaissance unit. As part of our learning about Michelangelo and his famous work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, students participated in a hands-on activity inspired by The Creation of Adam. Students held books over their heads while they worked, just as Michelangelo had to work above him while painting the chapel ceiling. With their arms raised, they carefully shaded in between the lines of a picture, all while trying to keep their artwork neat and accurate. They quickly discovered that working overhead was much more challenging than it looks!

It was a fun and engaging way for students to connect with history while experiencing just how challenging it must have been to do this. The activity encouraged creativity, perseverance, and a deeper appreciation for Michelangelo’s incredible work during our Renaissance unit.

Mr. Ingram

"Did you see the WTHS Welcome Back video? Have you wondered who worked behind the scenes to create it?

If you enjoyed the video—as many staff members, parents, and community members have shared—you can thank Mr. Norm Ingram. Although he often works alongside student helpers, our students had not yet returned, so he completed the entire project himself.

During the first two days of school, Mr. Ingram went throughout the building recording staff members as they welcomed students back. Through his creativity and talent, he transformed a simple idea into a heartfelt message of warmth and school spirit.

For his selfless service, dedication, and willingness to share his talents with our school community, we are proud to recognize Mr. Norm Ingram this month. Thank you, Mr. Ingram!"

Winning the Week: Eagles Tackle Time Management! Winning the Week: Eagles Tackle Time Management!

Success on the field begins with strong habits off the field! The WTHS football team recently participated in the first of a series of workshops presented by A Few Good Men.

During the time-management workshop, our student-athletes explored how to balance academics, practices, games, personal responsibilities, and their overall well-being. They discussed the importance of prioritizing responsibilities, minimizing distractions, breaking large assignments into manageable steps, and holding themselves accountable—even when motivation is low.

Players also identified common “time wasters,” including social media and certain apps, and considered practical ways to reduce distractions. They left with action steps they can begin using immediately, such as identifying their three most important daily tasks, creating a master schedule for classes and athletic commitments, and setting aside dedicated time for homework and studying.

After the thoughtful discussion, our student-athletes had an opportunity to relax, connect, and enjoy pizza, ice cream, and water ice together. It was the perfect ending to an afternoon of learning, reflection, and team building!

These workshops are helping our Eagles develop the discipline, organization, leadership, and decision-making skills needed to succeed in the classroom, on the field, and in life. We look forward to continuing this valuable series and watching our student-athletes put these lessons into action!

Thank you to A Few Good Men for investing in the growth and success of our WTHS student-athletes. A very special thank-you to WTHS teacher Mr. Langhorne for empowering our student-athletes by connecting them with this meaningful opportunity!
