Letter From the Principal Letter From the Principal

Greetings Eureka Families,

We are so excited to be back in school and are looking forward to a great school year together! It’s been wonderful seeing our students settling into routines and bringing all their great energy to the building each day.

The month of September is a busy one! We have already started our beginning of the year assessments in math and reading, which will continue into this week and next. In addition, as part of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, we’ve been teaching our STAR expectations in all areas of the school. Students are learning what it means to Stay Safe, Take Action, Act Responsibly, and Respect All Things—our STAR behaviors. Then, the week of Sept. 21-25 is Homecoming Spirit Week! Please see below for our spirit day themes!

Coming up in October, we will have parent/teacher conferences and our Halloween celebration. Please look for more information to be coming home closer to those times!

Just a reminder, we have breakfast available in our cafeteria for all students starting at 8:55 am each morning. If you haven’t already, please visit our Food Services website at https://www.sjredwings.org/our-district/foodservices/ and fill out the Education Benefit Form. Please contact the office at 989-227-4902 if you would like a hard copy of the form to fill out. Thank you for your time and help with this!

Thank you for your dedication and support from home, together we will make great progress with your child’s academics! We’re looking forward to a fantastic school year ahead!

Warm regards,

Tanya Klont

School anxiety can show up in different ways—ranging from morning stomach aches to complete refusal to get out of the car. It often masks itself as irritability, acting out, or extreme withdrawal, making it tricky to pinpoint at first. Some tips to help your child overcome school anxiety are:

*Have a consistent morning and evening routine.

*Keep yourself calm and relaxed.

*Have a conversation with the teacher and/or school counselor.

*Have your child bring in one small item from home.

*Teach and role model problem solving skills.

A few calming strategies to work with your child are deep breathing exercises, countdown from 10 to 1, do something active and focus on positive thoughts.

STAR Behavior STAR Behavior

To encourage and recognize positive behavior, students are earning Rocket Cards when they demonstrate STAR expectations. Once we reach 1,000 Rocket Cards, we will celebrate with a schoolwide reward! As of this morning, we’re already at 663!! In just 7 days of school! We’re well on our way! Rocket cards aren’t all though. Every day, throughout the day, all our staff is looking for, and watching for classes that are doing an excellent job of following expectations in all locations in the building to write a STAR award for. We have mailboxes for every grade level and when one of us sees a class doing a great job, we write down what we see the class doing and put it in their mailbox. At the end of each month, we count up the stars for each grade level, and whoever has the most stars wins the STAR class of the month award. They get the STAR to display outside their classroom and a 15 minute celebration reward. PLUS, the class that has earned the STAR award the most throughout the school year, will get a pizza party at the end of school year!

We’re also excited to recognize Students of the Month this year. Each month, we’ll focus on a different theme or character trait. For September, our theme is Empathy. We’ll be on the lookout for those students who show empathy with STAR behavior when they make sure that everyone they interact with feels seen, heard, and valued. These students strive to understand the needs of others. Every month we will have an assembly to announce our Students of the Month and we will also acknowledge our weekly Rocket Card winners.
