School Counseling Update: Fall 2025
Preventing Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB)
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we begin a new school year, we reaffirm a core value at Westfield Public Schools: every student deserves a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment. Preventing Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) is not only required by New Jersey law — it’s a shared responsibility among staff, families, and students.
Our Commitment
-
Engaged Staff: Teachers and counselors build welcoming spaces where students feel supported.
-
Prevention Programs: Lessons and events teach kindness, conflict resolution, and digital responsibility.
-
Diversity & Inclusion: We celebrate all backgrounds, ensuring every student feels valued.
-
Training: Staff receive regular HIB prevention training, supported by Anti-Bullying Specialists in each school.
-
Open Communication: We encourage families to reach out and stay involved.
How You Can Help
- Talk regularly: Discuss the importance of respect, kindness, and responsible behavior both in person and online.
- Encourage speaking up: Let your child know they should tell a trusted adult if they witness or experience bullying.
-
Model respect: Demonstrate empathy and positive communication in your own interactions.
-
Stay informed: Learn more about the NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights and district policies via our HIB Prevention webpage.
Together, we can ensure Westfield schools remain safe and inclusive for all. Thank you for your partnership and support.
Partnering with Families: October Awareness Weeks
Week of Respect: October 6-10
The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act designates this week to highlight the importance of kindness, empathy, and inclusion. Students will take part in activities that encourage positive relationships, celebrate differences, and build a culture of respect both in and out of school.
Family Conversation Starter
“Can you share a time this week when you showed respect to a classmate or teacher?”
School Violence Awareness Week: October 20-24
Family Conversation Starter
“If you saw a friend being treated unfairly or bullied, what could you do to help?”
Red Ribbon Week: October 23-31
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest drug prevention campaign. Students will learn about making safe and healthy choices, resisting peer pressure, and building habits that support long-term well-being. Schools may host spirit days, classroom lessons, and family activities to encourage a strong commitment to living drug-free.
Family Conversation Starter
“What are some hobbies, sports, or activities that help you feel good without needing substances?”
Student Assistance Counselor (SAC) Spotlight
Our Student Assistance Counselors (SACs) at the intermediate and high schools are here to support students’ social, emotional, and personal well-being. They provide a safe place to talk, guidance on challenges big and small, and resources for families. From leading schoolwide prevention programs to offering one-on-one support and group counseling, our SACs are dedicated to helping every student feel connected, cared for, and ready to succeed.
Thank you to Ms. Wilson (Edison), Ms. Trottere (RIS), Ms. Lane-Cruz (WHS), & Ms. Lopez (WHS) for all that you do!
Join the Blue Devil Network!
We’re inviting community members to share their stories and career experiences with Westfield High School students. Our upcoming event, Blue Devil Future Focus: College & Career Conversations led by Alumni & Local Voices, will take place on Tuesday, December 16th, from 9:30–11:00 a.m.
At this event, recent alumni will sit on panels to talk with juniors and seniors about their college experiences, while community members will meet in classrooms with freshmen and sophomores for small-group career conversations. By volunteering, you’ll inspire our students, expand their horizons, and become part of the Blue Devil Network—a growing community of alumni and local professionals who are helping guide the next generation.
Supporting Every Student: Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
Our school counseling MTSS is designed to meet the unique needs of all students. Through a tiered approach, we provide universal supports for everyone, targeted interventions for students who need extra guidance, and intensive support for those facing significant challenges. This framework helps us promote academic success, social-emotional growth, and overall well-being for every student in our district.
