The Principal's Perspective

For those who do not know, I happen to live in the city of Chicago. Living in the heart of this vibrant city offers a unique tapestry of experiences, and one of my absolute favorites is witnessing the annual transformation of our river into a flowing emerald spectacle. This past weekend, St. Patrick's Day, was no exception. The weather, particularly Saturday afternoon, blessed us with perfect conditions, and the city shimmered with a sea of green. I am certain that downtown Evanston was no exception!

Everywhere you looked, people of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds were united by a shared spirit of celebration. Laughter echoed through the streets, punctuated by the joyful clinking of glasses and the playful rustle of shamrock headbands. Yes, there were the revelers, embracing the festive spirit with gusto, and who can blame them? A St. Patrick's Day celebration without a lively party, a little Guinness and Jameson (LOL), is hardly a celebration at all for most.

But what truly warmed my heart was the sight of so many people, likely not of Irish descent, joining in the festivities with genuine enthusiasm. They weren't just observing; they were participating, sharing in the joy, and embracing the cultural moment. It made me think: what a truly remarkable world it would be if we could all approach our differences with such open hearts, celebrating each other's special occasions and traditions with genuine delight.

This experience reinforces my hope that we continue to foster this spirit of inclusivity and celebration at Nichols. That we encourage our children to not only respect but actively participate in the diverse cultural expressions that enrich our community. Because it is in these shared moments of celebration, in these acts of joining together, that we build a true sense of belonging.

Why is this sense of belonging so crucial? Because belonging is a fundamental human need. It's the feeling of being accepted, valued, and included. It's the knowledge that you are a part of something larger than yourself, a community that supports and celebrates you.

When children feel a sense of belonging, they are more likely to:

  • Thrive academically and socially: They feel safe and supported, which allows them to focus on learning and building positive relationships.
  • Develop a strong sense of self-worth: They understand that their unique contributions are valued and appreciated.
  • Embrace diversity and empathy: They learn to appreciate and respect differences, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious environment.
  • Become active and engaged members of their community: They feel a sense of responsibility and ownership, leading to greater participation and contribution.

The green river, the laughter, the shared joy – these are more than just fleeting moments of celebration. They are powerful reminders of the unifying power of shared experiences and the importance of fostering a sense of belonging for all. Let's continue to build a community where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated, not just on St. Patrick's Day, but every day.

SDRP Committees

Help Shape the Future of District 65 - Apply to join the Finance, Facilities, or Student Programming committee

The work on the Structural Deficit Reduction Plan (SDRP) continues! When July rolls around, the district will have taken decisive action to reduce its operating budget by $20 million over the past two years alone, putting D65 on a path towards much needed financial and organizational stability.

Despite the significant reductions already made, it will not be enough to put the district on solid financial footing in the long term. As we embark on the next phase of this journey, we invite you to be an integral part of the planning process by applying to serve on one of our three administrative committees.

While difficult decisions lie ahead, they present an opportunity to reimagine a more sustainable, equitable, and thriving District 65 for current and future generations of learners. Your voice, experience, and engagement are essential as we navigate this next phase.

Applications are open now through 11:59 p.m. on March 24, 2025. To learn more about the purpose and structure of these committees, visit the SDRP page of our District 65 website (accessible right from the homepage at district65.net).
