Cluster 2 Newsletter
September 23, 2022
Hello Parents, Guardians, and Caregivers,
Over the past two weeks, students have been settling into our school routine and we've begun some excellent learning. Make sure to be on the lookout every other Friday for our biweekly newsletter. A few notes for the upcoming weeks:
All students now have their Chromebooks! Please be sure they are being charged every evening so that your learner can access course materials and complete assignments.
Students may bring a small snack to eat during advisory (please no candy/soda).
The first round of progress reports will be available the first week of October.
As soon as it may seem, conferences are coming up at the end of October! We will be sending more information on how to schedule them in future Smores. The dates will be Thursday, October 27th and Tuesday, November 1st.
Here is a link to the specialist Smore.
Best,

Ms. Conceison ELA
We have started our first class novel! We are reading Thanhha Lai’s 2011 novel Inside Out and Back Again which won the National Book Award for Young People's Literature. We’re using The Notice and Note Fiction Signposts to identify key moments in the story and think/write deeply. We’re also learning new vocabulary words and learning how to discern their meaning using context clues. We’ll continue reading this novel through the month of October.
Ms. Murphy ELA
This week students have been continuing their learning utilizing the Language Live program. As a class we have discussed informational text features then identified them within our nonfiction text. Students have also completed lessons in word training, Unit 1. We have discussed and reviewed the differences between homonyms, nouns and verbs. This past Thursday, our class visited our school library and selected an independent book. Monday through Thursday, all students should be reading their selected independent book for at least 15 minutes per night.
Developing (ELD 3) Ms. Campos
This week, our class learned more about the elements of fiction and how to identify them in a story. We also learned how to use cause and effect to express ideas about the plot and theme of the story. As we continue to work on our values unit, we will read folktales, learn vocabulary, continue to practice identifying the elements of fiction and begin to study prepositions and prepositional phrases.
Expanding (ELD 4) Ms. Gilmartin
This week students continued practicing their skills in making observations and inferences, and giving reasons. They began a critical exploration of the poem Where I’m From, and after sharing annotations and academic discussion, they will write their own “Where I’m From” poems..
Math
Over the past couple of weeks, students have been working on finding areas of parallelograms, triangles, and polygons. They explored how rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles are related. Together, we came up with area formulas for parallelograms and triangles that use their base and height. Students were able to apply that knowledge to finding the areas of irregular polygons by breaking them down into familiar shapes. We ended this week with a quiz on finding these areas.
The last section of our geometry unit will start next week. Students will use what they know about 2D shapes to find the surface area of 3D objects like prisms and pyramids. They’ll be working with virtual and physical manipulatives to make sense of the faces, edges, and vertices that these objects have. To help support your learner at home, you can refer to the Desmos Unit 1 Family Resource
Science
Science students will be experiencing a life changing experiment! First, using hand lenses, qualitative and quantitative observations will be made of 5 mystery substances. Next, using graduated cylinders, mystery liquids will be added to each substance. FInally, daily observations of each substance will be made. Students will look for evidence (traits of living things) to support their claims that each substance is living, non-living, dead, or living and dormant. The following week, we will cellibrate our hard work by having the big reveal!
Our next big unit will be to study the building blocks of life: cells.
Social Studies
This week we have been deep in our globe projects. Students have been graphing coordinates to create the outlines of the continents, and many have begun labeling and creating the Equator and Prime Meridian. Next week students will complete their maps by drawing a specific type of thematic map they find interesting. Once that is done the maps will be laminated, cut, and transformed into accurate spherical representations of our planet. Look for them hanging in the 6th grade hallway when you come for conferences!
